SimilartothepreviouseditionsIhopethattherangeofindustrynews,documentsandvideosprovidedcontributetoyourwork.Inthisregard,remembertocontactmeincaseyouhavevaluableinformationtosharewiththeAssociationMembers,orsimplytoprovidethenewcoordinatesofyournewjob.ThisalsohighlightstheimportanceofkeepingyourinformationupdatedintheMembersAreaoftheIAMEwebsite.OurFaceBookpage isgrowing innumberssincewealreadyhave590 likes.InwhatconcernsourLinkedInpage,theIAMEnetworkcomprehends484Members,alittlebehindthe500barrierwhichIhopetoreachsoon.
Theshippingmarkethasbeenwitnessingchanges,someofwhichcancreatetremendousimpactontheindustrysuchastheNicaraguaCanal,acompetitivewaterwaytothePanamaCanal,whichistobebuiltinthenext11years,andtheP3alliancecomprisingthreebiggiantcompanies(MaerskLine,MSCandCMACGM),atamomentwhenshippingpoolsarebeingdissolved,asisthecaseoftheOdfjellTankersandtheDubaibasedNationalChemicalCarriers.
Meanwhile,theAsia/NorthEuropesufferedinAprilafallindemandrelativelytosupply,whichresultedinalossof$114perTEU.ThesamesituationoccurredintheAsiaMediterraneanwhoseratelost$86perTEU,thusmeetingDrewrysWorldContainerIndexdecliningrates.TheAustralianironoreportscongestionsloweddownalthoughwaiting time rose from7.2 to7.9dayswhilewaiting timeatcoalportswaskeptrelativelyunchangedat10.2days.Thetankermarketwitnessedseverelosses.ModernVLCCsareexpectedto go on operating at lossmaking levels unless demand and scrapping rates accelerate in the years tocome;tobreakevenexistingVLCCsneedcharterratesaround$30,000/day.GermanshipownersadvocatedthatashareofsingledeckersandminibulkersshouldbeinlayupbecauseoftheEuropeanshortsearoutesfreightslump.However,theindustrywitnessedinterestingevents.
Apositivemessagewas issuedby GlobalMarineTrendswhichadvocated that seaborne trade fromChina isexpectedtogoon increasingby2030,andthatboxshipsofcapacity+7,600TEUareexpectedtogrowthreetimesfasterthanthosebelowthe7,600TEU.Bourbon,theoffshorevesseloperatorreachedanagreementwithChinas ICBC Financial Leasingon a $1.5Bn leaseback arrangement forup to 51 supplyvessels.HyundaiHeavyIndustrieswonacontractworth$1.9BntobuildoneFPSOforChevronNorthSea.NSW Ports was awarded a 99year lease to operate Port Botany and Port Kembla in Sydney andWollongong,respectivelyfor$6Bn.Turkeysgovernmentdecidedtogoaheadwith itsplanstobuilda45kmcanaltoeaseBosporusshippingcongestion.Ninetreatingballastwatersystemswereaccepted intheUnitedStatesenablingshipownerstocomplywithnewregulations.

Theorganizershavepresentedastrongprogramwithplentyofroomforacademicreflectionandpersonalcontacts.DuringtheconferenceyouwillalsogetanupdateontheorganizationoftheIAME2014conferenceinNorfolk,Virginia.Inthepastmonths,theCouncilhasreceivedthreeformalbidsfortheIAME2015conference.AllthreebidscomefromAsia.ThedecisiononthevenuefortheIAME2015conferencewillbetakenduringtheCouncilmeeting inMarseille on July 2. InMarseillewewill have the official handover of the Secretariat fromAustraliatoGreece.Wehavereservedaslotintheprogramtothanktheoutgoingsecretariatandwelcomethe new one. The firstone from theDepartmentof Logistics andMaritime Studies (LMS) in the FacultyofBusinessofTheHongKongPolytechnicUniversity(PolyU).Theconferencehasthefullsupportof the four related centres housed in LMS, namely the CY Tung International Centre forMaritimeStudies,the IMCFrankTsaoMaritimeLibraryandResearch&DevelopmentCentre,theLogisticsResearchCentre,andtheShippingResearchCentre.
ThesecondonefromTheMalaysiaInstituteforSupplyChainInnovation.TheMalaysiaInstituteforSupplyChain Innovation (MISI) isacollaborationbetween theMITCenter forTransportationandLogistics (MITCTL)and theGovernmentofMalaysia.Registeredasan IPTSwith theMinistryofHigher Education,MISI is an independentdegree granting institute that focusson supply chainmanagement.

The Economic Importance of the U.S. Shipbuilding and Repairing IndustryMaritimeAdministration (MARAD).
