CEDAR GROVE — ChrisZablocki knew he hadsomething special on hishands a few years ago.
Cedar Grove-Bel-gium’s football coachalready had a stellarprogram fresh off a stateappearance in 2008 andwith a reputation forrushing the ball. He hard-ly needed to import anout-of-town runningback.
But some kid, just asophomore, showed up toschool in the fall of 2010after his family moved tothe area from Manito-woc. Zablocki’s footballprogram hasn’t been thesame since.
In just his first gamewith the Rockets, AlexGiles ran for a jarring180 yards on 16 carriesagainst Random Lake(the Rockets won handily,33-7). By halftime, he’drushed for four touch-downs — including oneon a 54-yard run andanother on a 44-yardcarry.
“I saw a lot of talentthere,” Zablocki saidafter a team practiceearlier this month.
“Alex is an exception-al young man,” he noted.“He’s a great leader.”
As a junior, he rackedup more than 2,600 yardsrushing (averaging near-ly 10 yards a carry) and36 touchdowns. He addedfour TD receptions and apair of kickoff returnsfor scores. Giles cappedhis season with an al-
most-400-yard rushingand six-score perfor-mance in a 49-48 lossagainst Lancaster in aDivision 5 State Champi-onship qualifier.
A few people, itseems, have started tak-ing notice of the Rockets’rising star.
Giles was one of justnine juniors named lastfall to the WisconsinFootball Coaches Associ-ation’s first-team All-State roster. The Associ-ated Press named him to
its own first-team All-State squad as well.
And Zablocki saidseveral big-name uni-versities — includingBig-10 schools Minnesotaand Indiana — haveshown interest in recruit-ing the senior.
“I never dreamed thatI would have been in thisposition, getting All-Statelast year and having theseason we did and com-ing out and just perform-ing,” Giles said.
“Minnesota and Indi-
ana and them, we email,me and the coaches, weemail back and forth, always keeping in touch,”Giles added, noting he’slooking for a college thatwill “give me a shot to bethe best I can be” whilealso providing a goodeducation.
“I don’t have to bewith the best (football)program.”
Part of his success,Zablocki said, lies inGiles’ natural talent. Thesenior, he said, has “a
specific skill set” and is“football smart.”
But he’s also a hardworker, dedicated in theweight room and vigor-ous on the practice field.
“He outworks every-one,” Zablocki said.
Giles said he es-chewed hitting theweights as a freshman, but has since turned theweight room into a sortof home away fromhome, going there evenwhen his friends aren’twilling to go with him.
“There were a coupletimes even this summerwhere the weight roomwas open, and I’d be oneof the only guys in therefor like an hour at atime,” he said. “It’d justbe me.
“When I was younger,I always wanted to bethat best player on thefield. And it came downto working in the weightroom, doing stuff whenother people didn’t wantto do it. … And I guessnow it’s just paying off.”

huis said.But if the Raiders
want to become morecompetitive in theirgames this year, the of-fense has to pick up theslack. After putting up 54points in the season open-er, North scored just 35points in its final eightgames.
“We tweaked (theoffense) a little bit,”Nienhuis said. “We’regoing to run out of the ‘I’,run an open set andthrow the ball around alittle bit.
“We’ll have a lot ofdepth at our skill posi-tions, guys who put in alot of work in open gyms. The skill position compe-tition should be prettygood this year; last year I
It didn’t take long forSheboygan North footballcoach Karl Nienhuis toget his first-ever win lastyear.
However, getting winNo. 2 was much morechallenging.
The Golden Raidersopened the 2011 seasonwith a rousing 54-0 rompover Green Bay West, but followed that withfive-straight losses be-fore finally breakingthrough with a 16-6 winover Green Bay East.
“We’re determined toput things on the righttrack,” Nienhuis said. “Idon’t know if that’s real-istic for this year or not,but the kids are workinghard.”
Turning around a pro-gram that has just fourplayoff appearances inthe 36-year history of theWIAA postseason isn’teasy. It’s not somethingthat can be done over-night.
“I think we had a greatoffseason,” said Nien-huis. “The coaching staffreally worked hard andso did the players. We putin some new weightlift-ing stuff. We’re lookingfor some improvementon all levels this year.”
North’s strength lastfall was its defense, aunit that held opponentsto 14 or fewer points fourtimes.
Karson Bell, TrevorPeters and Abel Madrigalare sure tacklers that arethe backbone of the de-fense.
“(They) hit people,cause turnovers,” Nien-
didn’t think we had asmany options.”
Senior quarterbackAaron Peterson returns, and junior running backDanny Wild is a hardrunner whom Nienhuis isexcited to watch thisyear.
“Peterson had a goodoffseason,” said Nien-huis. “He’s got a lot ofexperience, reallyworked hard. He looksgood, smart and his armstrength has improved.”
North is up in num-bers, and a strong juniorclass could help lead theway towards a playoffberth.
“We’re doing good,”Nienhuis said. “We’veprobably talked lessabout (the playoffs) since
I took over. I think thekids understanding that(a playoff berth) comesthrough the weight roomand comes through play-ing together is how youreach those goals.”
With an eight-gameschedule this year —meaning no non-confer-ence game — and schoolslike Pulaski, Manitowoc,Green Bay Southwest,Green Bay Preble andAshwaubenon on theslate, it won’t be a walk inthe park to get to theplayoffs. But Nienhuis iscomfortable with wherehis team is at.
“We fell good aboutwhere we’re moving,”said Nienhuis. “It’s atough conference, wewant to close the gap.”

BRUCE HALMO/THE SHEBOYGAN PRESS
The football landscapefor the Sheboygan areaas well as the state willlook and feel a bit differ-ent this fall.
Just 11 area schoolswill field full, traditional11-man football teamswith a 12th — ElkhartLake-Glenbeulah — go-ing to 8-man this season.The co-op of SheboyganLutheran/Kohler/Chris-tian will only play a JVschedule due to not hav-ing enough players tofield a varsity team.
These changes, alongwith a shorter schedule— teams will play onlyeight regular-seasongames — gives the faceof prep football a bigmakeover.
Fox River ClassicConference teams won’tplay a non-conferencegame, meaning eachgame is immensely im-portant for each team’splayoff hopes.
The Central Lake-shore Conference willcompete with five teams. If this year were a reg-ular nine-game slate,CLC teams would havehad to play more non-conference games (five)than conference games(four).
It has taken plenty ofcreativity for CedarGrove-Belgium, How-ards Grove, Oostburg,Ozaukee and RandomLake to fill out theirschedules. The Rocketswill face two opponentsfrom Michigan whileOostburg is set to take onan Illinois squad. All butHowards Grove have atleast one Saturday gamescheduled.
Because of the limitednumber of teams in Wis-consin that sponsor 8-man football — just 16total —- Elkhart Lake willhave to do plenty of trav-eling for games.
Elkhart has a home-
and-home set with ThreeLakes, a four-hour busride one-way. The Resort-ers will also travel toBeaver Dam and Madi-son for games.
Another schedulingquirk happens with She-boygan North and She-boygan South on Sept. 29.
The Redwings willtravel to Manitowoc toface the Ships for theirHomecoming; Manitowochas played its Homecom-ing game on Saturdayafternoon for years.
But also taking placethat day is North’s Home-coming against GreenBay East celebrating theschool’s 75th year.
North and Southhaven’t played on thesame Saturday since Oct.15, 1994, when they facedeach other at Urban Fieldthe final year beforelights were installed.North won the game54-20.
That same year wasthe last time each statechampion played only 13games, which will nowhappen this season.
The decision to switchfrom nine games to eightwas due to the change inthe playoff schedule thatwas implemented lastyear. The old three-games-in-10-days sched-ule was ousted and eachround of the playoffs wasspaced one week apart.
Due to the change, thepostseason now takeslonger, resulting in theregular season starting
earlier. When the calen-dar falls the way it doesthis year, coaches votedto eliminate one regular-season game instead ofbeginning practice Aug.1.
Schedules will returnto nine games in 2013, butthe same issue arises in2017 and 2018, whenteams will once again beknocked down to eightgames.
By then, who knowswhat the landscape ofhigh school football inthe area and state willlook like.

Three times last sea-son, Sheboygan South’sfootball team was eithertied or trailing by onescore in the fourth quar-ter and lost.
Change those defeatsto victories, and the Red-wings would have earneda second-straight trip tothe WIAA postseason.
Instead, South fin-ished 2-7 overall, 2-6 inthe Fox River ClassicConference a year aftermaking just the thirdplayoff appearance inschool history in 2010.
“We were so younglast year,” eighth-yearhead coach Chris Heinsaid. “(This year) we feellike we have a nice nucle-us back.”
Six starters return ondefense and seven play-ers are back that sawextensive playing time,
giving Hein and hiscoaching staff confi-dence the Redwings willbe improved on that sideof the ball.
“We’re looking to im-prove on defense,” saidHein. “That’s one thingwe really struggled withlast year. We have allthree linebackers back, two defensive linemenback and a secondaryplayer. That’s one areawe can improve.”
Offense hasn’t been aproblem for South; theRedwings have averagedmore than 21 points agame each of the pasttwo seasons with itsdeadly spread attack.
This year, South willlook to be under centermore than in the past, hopefully creating abetter balance betweenthe run and the pass.
“We really want to runthe ball better this year,”Hein said. “We led the
conference in passing thelast two years. I’ve al-ways felt you have to runthe ball to win champi-onships.”
Jake Knuth won anopen competition for thestarting quarterbackspot, a position he playedhis freshman year beforeplaying tight end/receiv-er the past two.
“This year we left itwide open,” said Hein.“Jake and I were talkingthis spring, he said hewas interested in the spotso I told him I’d give hima shot. He has the mostswagger, he’s been themost secure with the ball,he commands the huddlethe best. He won the job.”
Knuth will have plentyof options, with talentedreceivers Taylor Gregoryand Mitchell Martinez onthe outside and a trio ofrunning backs in BenSteen, Tristan Schmidtand Boris Ristivojevic.
There’s also fullbackAndrew Wildmann, whom Hein called “oneof the best all-aroundplayers on the team.”
“We have three tail-backs that we love,” Heinsaid. “And great athletesat wide receiver.”
A favorable homeschedule — South hostsGreen Bay West, GreenBay East, De Pere andBay Port (combined 10-28in 2011) — and plenty ofreturning experiencehave the Redwings think-ing playoffs.
“We have the mostreturning starters out ofany team on our sched-ule,” said Hein. “We feellike we have a chance toget back into the playoffsthis year. We definitelywant to have a winningrecord at home.
“We have to finishgames, we just have tocapitalize when the op-portunities come.”

“I would like to godeep in the playoffs. Getpast the second round, and then go from there Iguess,” senior linebackerOwen Henricksen said.“I’d say that’d be my
PLYMOUTH — A fewyears after Vince Lom-bardi’s boys hoisted thefirst-ever Super Bowltrophy, a much-youngerbunch of football playersfrom about an hour southof Green Bay were lift-ing up their own first-ever prize.
Plymouth won a Divi-sion 3 state title in 1976,the first year the WIAAsponsored a state footballtournament. Two yearslater, the team capped anundefeated season withanother state trophy, practically cementingthe central SheboyganCounty town as one of theWIAA’s first state foot-ball powerhouses.
“There’s great tradi-tion there,” Pantherscoach Dan Knaus saidrecently, referring to histeam’s decades-old lega-cy that still lingers onsome area football fans’minds.
The Panthers haven’tplayed in a state titlegame since 1978, thoughthey’ve been knocking onthe proverbial door for along time. The teamdidn’t make a single play-off appearance throughthe 1980s, but has madepostseason runs in all buttwo years since 1991(they missed the playoffsin 1993 and 2001).
Those playoff runshave all been short-lived
biggest goal: winningconference and getting tothe third round of theplayoffs.”
Besides constructing adeep postseason run, players have at least oneother goal this year: ThePanthers, who haveearned a reputation re-cently as one of the East-ern Wisconsin Confer-ence’s perennial teams tobeat, settled for second
place in the standingslast fall behind Kewas-kum; the team’s dead-seton retaking the confer-ence reins this year. (ThePanthers were confer-ence champs in 2009 and’10.)
“Our coaches everyyear have been settingeach team up every yearto win the conferencechampionship,” seniorrunning back Eric Rob-erts said. “And we werejust short last year, wewon it the year before, sothis year we’d like to getit back.”
Players, then, have ashort — but ambitious —to-do list this fall: First, take the conferencechampionship; then, getat least three (or four)games into the playoffs.
Knaus, though, knowsthere’s another goal somePlymouth old-timerswould like to see theteam accomplish: Re-catapulting the Panthersto their 1970s glory days.
“The communityknows — it’s dying foranother opportunity toget to (a state champi-onship),” Knaus said.“We’re trying to build theprogram back so we canget the community backthere.”
It took the Packers afew decades to get athird Super Bowl ringafter winning a pair inthe 1960s. Plymouth, itseems, is due for a re-turn.

A year ago, SheboyganFalls’ football team end-ed a four-year hiatusfrom the WIAA postsea-son under then-first-yearhead coach Brian Berlin.
And while a return tothe playoffs was a wel-come sight in Falls, itwasn’t always pretty inthe beginning.
The Falcons openedthe 2011 campaign with a19-13 loss to Elkhorn. Then after an easy 47-6win over Green BayNEW Lutheran, Fallsdropped a 49-13 decisionto rival Plymouth, whichwas followed by a 34-20setback against Camp-bellsport.
“We had a new coach-ing staff, new system, low numbers, all of thatworking against us,”Berlin said. “It was alittle bit of a hurdle lastyear to get things going.”
Sitting at 1-3 overalland 0-2 in the EasternWisconsin Conference, itappeared Falls was goingto miss the playoffs forthe fifth straight year.
But that’s when it allturned around.
The Falcons ripped offfour wins in a row, in-cluding back-to-back,down-to-the-wire victo-ries over Two Rivers(21-16) and Kiel (17-14).That qualified Falls forthe postseason, a place ithadn’t been since 2006.

players who are out forfootball for their senioryear — the Falcons seempoised to take the nextstep towards returning totheir dominant form, when they qualified forthe playoffs 19 times in22 years.
“Taking the next step, that’s the mission thisyear,” Berlin said. “Ithought we really over-achieved last year withthe hand that we weredealt. I told the team thisyear, I’ve never seen ateam come together sofast in two-a-days, andnot care about them-selves, care about theteam.
“I grew up in Falls, and football was the bigsport forever. It’s start-ing to feel like we’removing towards thatagain.”

Same as last year. The Raiders qualified
for the postseason in2011, led by the area’s toppass-catch combo. GeddyNordby was the area’ssecond-best quarterback(1,484 yards, 14 touch-downs) and David Ess-wein was the top receiv-er and one of the topplaymakers (47-988-10).Both are gone.
But fourth-year coachChris Bennin said thesituation is nothing new.Standout athletes havecome and gone, but theteam is hopeful the re-sults remain the same.
“Every year we lose alot, and there’s alwayskids who seem to stepup,” said Bennin. “Welost some key guys, but alot of kids at camp areshowing some skill.”
Senior wideout JakeGroth, a top candidate tofill Esswein’s shoes thisfall, said the team’s goalis to go 4-3 and get backto the WIAA postseasonfor the third-straightseason.
The Raiders havenever in their historyqualified for the playoffsthree consecutive sea-sons.

In fact, good thingsare expected for Kiel ingeneral. And if the Raid-ers can win some of thosebig conference games —Sheboygan Falls and TwoRivers, in particular —the goal of becoming aperennial playoff teammay be here.

HALMO/THE SHEBOYGAN PRESS
Plenty of preseason hype
has narrowed the conference
title races down to a select
number of contenders in the
three conferences in which
area teams play.
In the Fox River Classic
Conference, Green Bay South-
west appears to be the clear-
cut favorite, with its top
challenge coming from Green
Bay Preble.
In the Eastern Wisconsin
Conference, Plymouth and
Kewaskum appear set to fight
it out for the top spot. The
Panthers and Indians have
won or shared the conference
title in each of the past nine
years.
And in the Central Lake-
shore Conference, 2011 state
semifinalist Cedar Grove-
Belgium appears set to win its
seventh league crown in the
last nine years.
FRCC
» Ashwaubenon slipped
from going undefeated in the
FRCC in 2010 to 4-4 in 2011.
Quarterback Kyle Mrozinski
returns to lead an offense
that averaged nearly 30
points a game in the regular
season last year.
» Bay Port will be under
the new direction of Gary
Westerman, who comes over
from FRCC rival Pulaski.
If the Pirates’ young play-
ers can step up and prove
themselves early, Bay Port
should once again be back
near the top of the FRCC
standings.
» De Pere will rely on its
defense, where seven starters
return. The Redbirds strug-
gled moving the ball offen-
sively last year due to a lack
of size on the line, but should
be in better shape this year
and have a solid shot at an-
other playoff appearance.
» Green Bay East hasn’t
made the playoffs since 2007,
and the Red Devils were
struck with several key in-
juries last season en route to
a 2-7 record.
» Green Bay Preble
finished tied for second in the
FRCC last year, and with
another year of implement-
ing second-year coach Paul
Donart’s system, the Hornets
should contend for the con-
ference title. Preble’s strength
is its defense, which should
keep the team in each of its
games.
» Green Bay Southwest
went to the state semifinals in
Division 2 and has gone to
the playoffs four straight
years under coach Bryce Paup.
The Trojans are expected to
challenge for a spot in the
state title game this fall.
Returning experience on
offense and a stout defense
led by Nathan Paup makes
Southwest to favorites in the
FRCC.
» Green Bay West strug-
gled mightily in 2011, but
should be improved this year.
Numbers are up for the Wild-
cats, as the program works at
becoming a relevant squad in
the conference.
» Manitowoc lost 27
seniors, including six All-FRCC
first-team selections, four
second-team selections and
three honorable mentions,
from a team that won the
FRCC with a perfect 8-0 rec-
ord last year.
» Notre Dame advanced
to the Division 3 state semi-
finals after going just 5-4 in
the regular season before
running into eventual state
champion West De Pere.
The Tritons will have
plenty of talent to replace,
including running back Alex
Miller, the offensive player of
the year in the FRCC a year
ago.
» Pulaski has a new head
coach in Jed Kennedy, who
won the Division 1 state title
last year at Kenosha Brad-
ford. The Red Raiders will
implement the wishbone
offense and should showcase
some solid athletes on the
defensive side of the ball.
EWC
» Campbellsport has
increased its win total over
the last three years from one
to two to five last season.
Continued progression will
result in the program’s first
playoff berth since 2005.
» Kewaskum has dueled
with Plymouth at the top of
the EWC for several years,
and claimed conference
supremacy last year with a
perfect 7-0 league mark. Six
starters are back, along with
14 letterwinners.
» Two Rivers lost two-
way first-team all-conference
selection Shawn Shillcox, but
should be in good shape
overall heading into 2012.
Head coach Brent Luebke
returns 12 starters and 25
letterwinners from last year’s
team.
» Waupun has had a
tough go of it lately, winning
just five conference games in
four years, including a 1-6
mark last year. Following the
graduation of a large senior
class, it could be another
challenging season for the
Warriors.

NEW HOLSTEIN — NewHolstein won just onegame in 2011, ending afive-year stretch of play-off-berth football.
The Huskies won sev-en games in 2008 and2009, then went 8-4 in ’10before going just 1-8 lastseason.
Head coach GregFictum is gone, now acoach at Concordia Uni-versity-Mequon. Theschool just hired a newcoach in late July, forc-ing a quick turnaround.
Fortunately, the tran-sition will be as smoothas possible with the pro-motion of Matt Rupp, theprogram’s JV coach andvarsity assistant for thelast 12 years.
“It hasn’t been a lot ofchange, to be honest,”said Rupp, a scienceteacher at the highschool. “We’ve alwaysworked together in ev-erything we do. It doesn’tfeel that different, ex-cept I have to give thespeeches.”
Longtime coach ChuckLefeber, a former headand co-head with Fictum, remains on staff as avarsity assistant, andRupp is grateful to pickthe brain of the veteran.
“He’s our defensiveguru, but he knows ev-erything. He’s one of thesmarter high schoolcoaches around.”
Rupp said it helps thathe and Lefeber have thesame philosophy: De-fense wins footballgames.
“We want to make acommitment to our de-fense. That’s our goal,”
said Rupp.New Holstein’s line-
ups will be fairly fresh;just two starters returnon each side of the ball. Thus, the Huskies plan toget back to basics, usingthe run-oriented Wing-Toffense to gain yards onthe ground. Shoulderingthat load will be a pair ofspeedy, if small in stat-ure, running backs.
Junior Mike Blanck(5-9, 145) is one of theEastern Wisconsin Con-ference’s top sprinters, and senior Adam Schmitz(5-10, 150) is “right therewith him” in terms ofquickness and speed, said Rupp.
Junior Mark Sippel(6-1, 175), arguably theteam’s top defensiveback last year, will takeover quarterback dutiesfor the graduated SamCash.
“We don’t have any
one guy that anybodyfears,” said Rupp. “Wehave to play together, play as a team, and getback to New Holsteinfootball, with three guysgetting the ball, usingfakes.”
The line will be an-chored by senior ShaunMayr (6-4, 285), a return-ing starter on both sides. He’ll move from centerto tackle on offense. Therest of the up-front willbe filled mostly by sopho-mores and juniors. Ruppsays what they lack inexperience they make upfor in sheer strength.
That includes juniorBob Scherer (6-3, 240),who squatted 550 poundsand benched more than300 earlier this month. He recently turned 16years of age. Schererwanted to be a sprinterduring the spring trackand field season, to help
with his quickness forfootball.
The weight room wasbusy this summer. Ruppsays the team had 79-percent attendance hit-ting weights three timesper week, plus speed andagility training on theside.
New Holstein is hop-ing to limit two-way play-ers. The program had 68boys go out for football, including 27 freshmen.
The Huskies wereshut out three times enroute to a winless EWCrecord in ’11, but theplayers are focused onturning things aroundright away.
“We have to do every-thing right, we have to dotechnique right, and playfootball the way it wasmeant to be played,” saidRupp. “All those littlethings will add up to bigthings.”

The Rockets last yearwent undefeated throughthe regular season tofinish first in the CLCstandings. It was thethird time in four yearsCedar Grove had fin-ished undefeated andatop the conference —2010 marked the onlyexception, when theRockets went 6-3 andtook third place behindOzaukee and conference-champion Oostburg.
Rockets coach ChrisZablocki said the teamwill be a bit smaller thisyear — not just in termsof player numbers (theroster is down a bit fromlast year), but also inplayers’ sheer physical-ity. He thinks the teamwill do just fine, though,
CEDAR GROVE — CedarGrove-Belgium’s exitfrom the playoffs lastyear was an understand-ably bitter pill to swal-low.
The Rockets, cele-brating their return tothe top of the CentralLakeshore Conferenceafter handing the reins toOostburg a year before, had one last hurdle be-tween themselves andtheir first trip to Statesince 2008.
That hurdle, though, proved just a little bit toobig. Just one point toobig, to be exact.
Lancaster, the eventu-al WIAA Division 5 StateFootball runner-up, heldon for a 49-48 win overCedar Grove in a state-qualifying match lastNovember. (Lancasterwent on to lose 44-43 inovertime in the state titlegame to Colby, the sameteam that beat CedarGrove in the 2008 statechampionship.)
“It was a heartbreakerto put up those kind ofnumbers and kind of helpthe team through and toend up losing by one,”said running back AlexGiles, who rushed fornearly 400 yards andscored six times in theloss. “I mean, it hurts andit sets that fire.
“I’m hungry now,” hesaid.
Cedar Grove has madenine straight playoffappearances since 2003,and became the area’smost recent footballteam to advance to thestate title game in 2008.
noting the team promisesto have some faster play-ers.
“If people look on thefield, they’re going torealize that we’re not asbig as we usually are. …But people will noticethat, I think, we’re a lotfaster than we’ve everbeen.”
Smaller or not, fasteror not, Zablocki said atleast one other thing iscertain this season: Play-ers are awfully motivat-ed after last fall’s heart-breaking loss to Lancas-ter.
“It was a tough loss,”he said. “But everythinghappens for a reason. Welearned and becamebetter men from thatsituation, that game. It
was a great game; wejust happened to be onthe wrong side of theball.
“As long as everyonegives 100 percent — giveeverything they have, and leave everything onthe field — we alwayswill be satisfied,” thehead coach said, noddingto the emphasis his pro-gram places on effort asmuch as it does on win-ning.
But, he noted, a statetitle doesn’t make for abad carrot on a stick.
“Every team’s goalwhen they start camp,”Zablocki said, “is to bringhome that gold ball, inwhatever division theyare in.”

the field and the game isplayed on an 80-by-40yard field. Elkhartplayed Stockbridge lastyear in an 8-man gameand rolled to a 67-0 win.
“Last year when weplayed Stockbridge, wedidn’t really know whatwe were doing,” Feld-mann said.
With just 16 schools inthe entire state sponsor-ing 8-man football, theResorters will be doingplenty of traveling thisyear now that they are nolonger in the CLC, in-cluding a four-hour one-way trip to Three Lakesin October, along withtrips to Beaver Dam andMadison.
“I’ll miss the competi-tion (in the CLC),” Feld-mann said. “Our kidswere talking about it(Wednesday), they’regoing to miss the rivalrywith Howards Grove for
It was a long, harddecision Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah footballcoach Barry Feldmannhad to make.
At Elkhart, a schoolwith an enrollment ofjust 149, the year-in andyear-out struggle to fieldan 11-man football teamwas growing harder andharder.
So the Resorters madethe decision to switch to8-man football, giving theprogram a bit of a jolt.
“I believe it is abso-lutely the right move forour football program,numbers-wise,” Feld-mann said. “With ourenrollment, we’re justnot getting enough kidsout for 11-man football tobe competitive any-more.”
Proof that Elkhart wasstruggling to remaincompetitive was evidentlast season, when theResorters went 2-4 in theCentral Lakeshore Con-ference despite havewhat Feldmann called“probably the most tal-ented senior class thatI’ve ever coached.”
That class includedunanimous first-teamAll-CLC quarterbackKyle Rentmeester, whothrew for 1,417 yards and12 touchdowns last sea-son, along with receiverJosh Schneider (43 catch-es, 665 yards, three TD)and running back BlakeLoucks (897 yards and 11TD).
“Absolutely, if wewere going to make a runin the CLC that was goingto be the year,” said Feld-mann. “With extra play-ers, we could get somekids some rest. That’s
what hurt us.”Replacing Rentmees-
ter will be Elliot Van Oss,while Taylor Kaboord —who caught 27 passes for400 yards and fourscores a year ago —gives Elkhart a danger-ous playmaker on theoutside.
Feldmann is also ex-pecting big things out ofDevin Pfeifer on bothsides of the ball as wellas Cody Wilterdink andShane Schanke.
“Our senior class thisyear is pretty decent,”said Feldmann. “We’vegot some underclassmanthat are very talented. We definitely worked inthe offseason on footspeed and getting quick-er; we are a lot fasterthan what we were lastyear.”
In 8-man football, thetwo offensive tackles anda receiver are taken off
the County A sign. Hope-fully now, with our newchapter, we can findsomebody close and startthat kind of rivalry. Iwish everyone in the CLCgood luck, I’m going tomiss it.”
And while 8-man foot-ball does not have a play-off system yet, there is ajamboree scheduled forearly November that willput the top four teamsfrom the north againstthe top four teams fromthe south, giving Elkhartsomething to play for.
There’s certain to beplenty of bumps in theroad in the inaugural runas an 8-man team, but fora program losing thenumbers battle, it wasthe right choice.
“It was a very toughdecision,” Feldmann said.“It’s just the numbersaren’t going to lie. Eight-man was the way to go.”

are perennially the teamsthat are in the upperhalf,” Schmid said. “Soevery game I think isgoing to be a battle.”
Cedar Grove-Belgiumhas had an effective lockon the conference’s topspot in recent seasons, and looks to remain astrong contender thisyear with star runningback Alex Giles back inthe lineup for his seniorcampaign. Oostburg,Ozaukee and RandomLake will round out theconference.
The Tigers haven’tfinished better thanfourth place in the CLCsince 2008, when How-ards finished second inthe league. But Schmidsaid he sees some simi-larities between thisfall’s senior class and theone in ’08.
“They had decentnumbers, which we havein our senior class. Andthey both like to work out
HOWARDS GROVE —
Tigers football coachDave Schmid has someambitious goals for the2012 season.
He wants to win theCentral Lakeshore Con-ference title and takehomefield advantage intothe playoffs.
But he’ll have to con-tend with plenty of chal-lenges — many of themoutside his control — ifhe wants those dreams tocome true.
Elkhart Lake-Glenbeu-lah’s football team isdropping out of the CLCto form an 8-man teaminstead, competing withsimilar-sized teams fromacross the state. Luther-an/Kohler/Christian,meanwhile, isn’t fieldinga varsity squad this fall.
“It’ll be a very toughconference race becausethe (teams) that are left
hard in the offseason andlove football,” he said.“Where that (2008) teamhas a little bit of an ad-vantage on us is we justhad more juniors on theteam than we do thisyear.”
A smaller team isanother of those prob-lems Schmid will have todeal with. “I had one ofthe biggest teams in my11 years (coaching) lastyear as far as numbersgo, and this year I haveone of the smallestteams,” he said.
But none of it — notthe leaner conference, not the recent string ofmiddling seasons, not thesmaller roster — is keep-ing Schmid from settinghis sights high this fall.
The team’s first goal,as it is every year, will beto win the conferencechampionship this sea-son.
“Beyond that, then,we’d like to win a home
playoff game,” Schmidsaid.
The Tigers have madea habit of going to theplayoffs, missing thepostseason tournamentjust twice in the last 10years — in 2002 and ’10.
But they haven’tplayed a home playoffgame since 2008. Thatyear, the third-seededTigers won at home inthe first round beforelosing on the road in thesecond. In 2009 and ’11,the Tigers opened theirpostseasons with first-round losses on the road.
“If we do win confer-ence and take care ofbusiness there, or finishpretty high, we can get ahome playoff game andthat’s usually easier toplay at home than it is togo on the road to some-body else’s place,”Schmid said.
And after that? “…We’ll see where the play-off road takes us.”

Tony Teunissen, asenior nose tackle who’sbeen with the team sincehis freshman year, said itwould “be nice” to win aconference champion-ship this fall, but notedhis real goal lies in thepostseason. For him, asatisfactory season, hesaid, would involve “atleast getting into theplayoffs, with like a 7-2record or something likethat.”
“I think our chances toget into the playoffs arepretty good,” Teunissensaid.
Despite the growingpains Oostburg mightface this fall, Ring noted
OOSTBURG — ScottRing knows his footballteam has plenty of obsta-cles standing in the wayof a conference champi-onship this season.
Cedar Grove-Belgiumhas been the CentralLakeshore Conference’sperennial crème de lacrème, winning the con-ference title three of thepast four years.
Ring’s Oostburg team, meanwhile, has lost itsentire starting offensiveline from last fall and hasa roster loaded withfresh, untested talent.
“To get to where wecan beat Cedar Grove,we have a learning curveto get over first,” Oost-burg’s coach said earlierthis month.
“We have a lot of testsin front of us.”
For one, the entireoffensive line will benew, forcing “a big learn-ing curve” along theoffensive front, Ringsaid.
“In defense, too, we’replaying a lot of guys inpositions that have neverplayed there before.”
Since 2009 — whenthis year’s seniors werefreshmen — Oostburghas proved itself to be aperennial top-tier team inthe CLC. The FlyingDutchmen took secondplace behind CedarGrove in 2009 and ’11,and won the conferencetitle in 2010.
The Dutch have madeplayoff appearances fivestraight years since 2007,and have advanced to thepostseason 10 times since1997 (they missed theplayoffs in 1998, ’01, ’03,’04 and ’06).
But with such a fresh-faced bunch this year —Ring said his rosterboasts just six seniors —it’s tough to make boldpredictions about whatthe 2012 campaign mighthold in store.
“With having a youngteam like that, it’s kind oftough to be able to say,‘This is what I’m going tobe happy with,’” he said.
“I’m expecting theirbest. And what their bestends up being is exactlywhat I’m looking for. They have nothing to gooff of from season toseason with a group thathas never really playedtogether.”
he refuses to label 2012 a“rebuilding” year. For hissmall group of seniors,he said, this fall will beanything but a rebuildingseason — it’s their going-away party.
“These kids get thatone chance,” he said.“You can’t bring themback for another year …So I never like to say‘rebuilding season.’ Idon’t think that’s what itis.
“I think the biggeststrength for this team,”Ring added, “is that theyare willing to learn, they’re willing to getbetter, they want to getbetter, they listen to whatyou say. They’re verycoachable.”

Jim Lippe
FREDONIA — After twoyears of running thesingle wing offense, astyle seldom seen any-where in the state, Ozau-kee will no longer be ableto sneak around andthrough unsuspectingopponents.
That doesn’t mean it’sgoing to be any easier tostop.
Third-year coach JimLippe has helped turnaround a program thathad limited success —six straight years with-out playoff berth — into asolid program. Aftergoing 3-6 in 2009, Ozau-kee went 8-2 in Lippe’sfirst season and 6-4 lastyear.
With a brutal scheduleand the loss of a 2,000-yard rusher, things willnot get easier this fall. But the Warriors arepoised to keep the suc-cess going.
“Everything’s goinggood,” said Lippe. “We’vehad really good fall campso far.”
Elkhart Lake-Glenbeu-lah left the Central Lake-shore Conference to play8-man club football, andLutheran/Kohler/Chris-tian dropped its varsityteam for one season. That created a toughsituation for the fiveremaining CLC teams tofind four non-conferencegames in an eight-gameseason.
Ozaukee’s schedule isconsidered the mostdifficult in the statebased on last year’s rec-ords. It includes non-conference gamesagainst a state champion(Fond du Lac Springs)and a semifinalist (Bur-
lington Catholic Central),plus CLC powerhouseCedar Grove-Belgium.
“We have quite theschedule,” chuckledLippe. “It is what it is. Wehave a tough group ofkids. We’re going to playsome football.”
The single wing linesup three running backsbehind center but no truequarterback. Last year, itwas Devon Linzenmeyerwho carried the show, rushing for 2,163 yardsand 30 TDs. He was alsothe team’s top passer.
No one player willreplace that production, but Lippe likes four play-ers who will combine toget the job done.
Lippe said senior Lo-gan Smith will likely getthe most touches, thoughseniors Ethan Brouilletteand Hunter Hess, and
junior Kevin Beckmannwill all get their hands onthe ball.
“They’re not DevonLinzenmeyer, but they’rereal nice running backs,”said Lippe, “We’re defi-nitely going to be able torun the ball this year, nodoubt about it.”
Three returning offen-sive linemen — seniorsHunter Vande Boom andBryce Erlwig and juniorCody Stageman — willlead block for the four-some.
While the offense getsthe headlines, Ozaukee’sdefense should be im-proved, especially atlinebacker and in thesecondary. Nine of thetop 11 defenders fromlast year are back.
Leading will be seniorSteve Steet, a 6-foot-7senior who roams the
backfield at safety. Lippesaid Street’s speed andpresence allows for ag-gressive play in the frontseven.
“Our goal is, we’rehoping to win a CLCchampionship this year,”said Street. “We shouldbe very good on offense, and defense, too. Improv-ing line play is going tobe the key.”
Along with runningthe ball, Hess, Brouilletteand Beckmann will dou-ble as a formidable line-backing corps.
Ozaukee went 6-4 lastseason, with two of thelosses coming fromSprings, one from CGBand the other from Oost-burg, which finished 7-3.
“Our goal is to winconference and take anice run into the play-offs,” said Lippe.

in Random Lake. Thisyear’s team is poised toshow that the program’scurrent trend is a hiccupin its proud history.
“We want to workhard and improve everyweek, and want to com-pete in each game. Wewant to give ourselves achance to win,” saidcoach Chris Bichler, entering his 15th season.“Those (goals) aren’tgoing to change.”
With Elkhart Lakeleaving the CLC to play8-man club football, andLutheran/Kohler/Chris-tian taking a year offfrom varsity play, gettingthe needed conferencevictories to return to thepostseason will be eventougher.
“Our conference hasalways been a very goodfootball conference,”said Bichler.
RANDOM LAKE — Formore than a decade, Ran-dom Lake football wasthe benchmark of small-school football in thearea, and kings of theCentral Lakeshore Con-ference.
From 1995 through2009, the program hadzero or one loss in CLCplay 11 times, went un-beaten four times andqualified for the playoffsevery year but one. TheRams had just one CLClosing season in thatstretch, back in 2000.
But Random won justone game in 2011, downfrom three the year be-fore. That seasonsnapped a nine-yearstretch of qualifying forthe playoffs.
The goals don’t change
The Rams have num-bers issues this year —just 36 boys are out forvarsity and JV combined— though the youth pro-gram is currently thriv-ing. And Bichler ispleased with the dedica-tion shown in practice.
“Numbers are down, but the kids who are outare working hard anddoing OK,” said Bichler.
There will be a lot oftwo-way players, butmany of them have con-siderable playing experi-ence.
The offense can leanon returning startingquarterback BradySchmidt. Among return-ing signal-callers in thearea, Schmidt, a senior, ranks No. 2; he threw for964 yards and six touch-downs.
“He knows the of-fense, and he’s pro-
gressed and grown,” saidBichler. “He definitelygives us a nice presenceon the field.”
Random Lake hasalways been a run-firstteam, and the halfbackduties will be filled bythree different playerswith the graduation ofJustin Lunde (787 yards,14 TD). Fullback, howev-er, is set with experi-enced returnees in seniorJake Schwan and juniorJesse Verbanec.
Whether or not this isthe season Random Lakegets back to its winningways, the Rams are fo-cused to have a bounce-back season, building to abrighter future that mir-rors its past.
“Last year is in theback of our heads,” saidSchmidt. “We’re lookingto get better and keepimproving.”
