CONTENT //IMPULSECANADACARVACUUMCLEANEREARPIECELIFTASPIRINAMP

TheHosltenImpulsewasaconceptthatIdidinmythirdyearatHumber.TheImpulseisathrowbackdesignthat’srecapturesthefeelingsandemotionsthatconnectedriderswiththeirbikepostWW1&2.Theseriderswerepilotsfromthewarwhoweresearchingforthatrushthattheyfoundwhenoperatinganairplane,aswellasabike.

Thiswasanextremelysuccessfulproject,resultinginafeatureintheSeptember2011issueof“CycleCanada”.

Storytellingisanextremelyimportantaspectofdesign.Ifeltthatbydevelopinga“brand”formymotorcyclewouldhelptoreinforceandvalidatethedesign.

Holstenisamotorcyclemanufacturingcompanythatemergedinthelate2020’s.The“IMPULSE”wastheirgroundbreakingmodelthatattractedridersacrosstheglobebybringingthembacktotheirrootslikewithsuchbikesastheRedIndian.

Aperfectmarriageofmanandmachine.TheImpulseisloud,powerful,unnecessary,andmostimportantly,fun.

ThegoalofthisprojectwastodesignavehiclethatisinsomewayreminiscentofCanada,aswellasCanadianculture.OptingtostayawayfromstereotypicalsolutionsIgravitatedtowardsothermoresubtleinspirations,suchasLawrinHarris’laterworkwithglaciersandicebergs

TheAlgoma’sdesignlanguespeakstothosewhowishtotravelourgreatcountryinthemostcomfortablewaypossible.TakingdesigncuesfromLawrenHarrisandthenaturallandmarksofCanada,theAlgomatrulyisaCanadiancar. Thisvehicleisintendedtoseatfourpeople,comfortably.Bylocatingtheelectricenginesinsideoftherearwheelwellsthecabinofthevehiclewasabletobebroughtforward,allowingthepassengerstositinthereclinedpositionfacetoface.

Thelongestphasewassculptingtheclay.Dimensionswerereferencedfromtapedrawing.

Thefinalstagewasfinishingthesurfacebyslickingandpolishingtheclay.

BearingaestheticsinmindIrenderedthemodelinatastefulwhiteandgreenpaintjobwiththemotionsensorsandactualvacuumenclosedinablackcomponent.Ialsocoveredmostofthecomponentsinplasticforeasycleaningaswellasprotection.Thegreenwraparoundshieldwasimplementedtoprotectallthevital,morefragilepieces.

As an avid starwars fan it’s often easy to find inspiration in unorthodoxplaces.Forexample,thisvacuumcleanersformwasoriginallyshapedafterthe“mouse droid” (seen to the right).Themouse droid has similar characteristicsasavacuumcleanereventhoughtheoverallpurposeisdifferent.Ratherthanacommunications messenger, the vacuum cleaner uses the same selfguiding ideals as the mouse droid and is relatively the same size.

Workedwithchiefdesigner,LenClementtodesignamodularearpiecetobefittedwithcurrentbullridinghelmetmodels.Thismonthlongprojectresultedinsuccessfulproductthatwasmanufacturedandiscurrentlyinmarket.

MANUFACTUREDPART

ThemodularearpiecedesignedforPhoenixwasdesignedtopreventtheridersfromgettingtheirearscutfromabullshoofwithoutinhibitingtheirabilitytohearthedirectionsoftherodeoclownswhendismounted.Theformwasanotherinfluencingfactorinthisdesign.Ithadtomatchtheoriginalcurvatureofthehelmetandaestheticofthehelmetwhilelookingdurable.

Thechairprojectwasdoneincollaborationwith3otherdesigners;ChrisWright,ElyssaSmelko,andJamieRiccottone.Togetherwedesigned,developed,andbuiltachairforachosendistrictofTorontothatwillmeetthedemandsofthosepopulatingitaswellasthecafe/bistroweweredesigningitfor.

Liftcontributestoasustainablelifestyle.Thematerialswherecarefullychosenastopromoteglobalwellbeing.Bambooisthefastestgrowingvegetationknowntoman,makingitanextremelyrenewableresource.Thestainlesssteellegsarealsoagoodalternativetoitschromecounterpart.

CollegeWest,situatedinlittleItaly,takesitsnamefromtheUniversityofToronto(originallykingscollege).Afterthebabyboomithasbecomeaculturallyrichneighborhood.

TheaimwastodesignanddevelopasustainablepackagingsystemforanyoneofBayer’smedicinalproducts.IncollaborationwithCameronSmyth,andCalvinMurraywedesignedanewpackagethatresultedinadramaticdecreaseinwasteaswellasaninnovativenewdispensarymethod.Asagroupwefinishedfourthinthiscompetition.

WhiledevelopingamoresustainableproductforBayerwefocusedourattentiononafewareasthatwefeltusedmorethannecessary.Thoseareasbeing;accessamountsofmaterial,useofspaceonshippingpalletsaswellasshelves,andthematerialsused.

Retailreadyeliminatestheneedforthecardboardexteriorandincreasestheloadofeachshippingpalletby50%.Whenintroducedtoactivebacteria,theproductbiodegrades
