University Administration
Dr. James M. Simmons, Lamar Uni-versity’s president, has led Lamar into anew era of dynamic growth.
Momentum has been the watchwordof Simmons’ administration, a period inwhich enrollment recorded its largest in-crease in Lamar’s almost 90-year history, with more than 14,500 students in fall2011. Even in the wake of two majorstorms – Hurricane Ike in 2008 and Hur-ricane Rita in 2005 – Simmons and histeam kept classes and graduation onschedule, restoring the campus after sub-stantial damage as well as adding state-of-the-art facilities.
In spring 2008, the university launchedits first comprehensive campaign, “In-vesting in the Future,” with the ambitionsgoal of $100 million. Nearing that markin January 2012, the goal was increasedto $125 million. Impact of the campaignis far reaching – to include endowmentsfor four named academic departments, gifts to support revival of the Cardinals’football tradition, establishment of amajor student fellowship program andsubstantial growth in scholarship funds.
Simmons also implemented a masterplan to enhance the campus throughlandscaping and buildings, most notablythe Cardinal Village residence halls, which now accommodate more than2,500 students. The Dining Hall, whichopened in spring of 2006, and the SheilaUmphrey Recreational Sports Center, dedicated in spring of 2007, further con-tributed to campus life.
Renovations and expansions of severalmajor academic buildings have beencompleted, are under way or are in plan-ning phases. Lamar has also seen majorenhancements to its athletic facilities, with the crown jewels including ProvostUmphrey Stadium and the Dauphin Ath-letic Complex. Vincent-Beck Stadiumand McDonald Gym have enjoyed majorupgrades, and the LU Soccer and SoftballComplex opened in 2009.
The university’s designation as a
Doctoral Research University by theCarnegie Foundation for the Advance-ment of Teaching is a powerful affirma-tion of Lamar’s high level of researchactivities. Recognizing that online pro-grams are vital to the university’s future,Simmons has continually sought growthin that area. Today, more than 30 percentof LU’s credit hours are now generatedthrough online courses; nearly 4,200 ofthe university’s students learn entirely on-line, and LU is a recognized leader in on-line education.
Simmons took office as president onSept. 1, 1999, bringing a wealth of per-spective to the position. A Lamar veteranof more than four decades, he previouslyserved as dean of the College of FineArts and Communication and as interimexecutive director of university advancement.
He began his Lamar career in 1970 asan instructor and director of the march-ing band. He quickly rose through theranks, serving as director of bands andas chair of the music department. Simmons is also a leader in community
service, having garnered dozens of
awards and accolades. He has attractedacclaim as an orchestra leader and as aperformer on clarinet, saxophone andpiano. Because of his leadership role, those pursuits have taken a back seat, buthe often says music is his first love, andhe continues to grace the stage.
Simmons is known as an administratorwith a strong sense of direction and akeen ability to attract and cultivate tal-ented faculty – who, he stresses, are pro-fessionals who teach rather thanprofessional teachers. His innovative ap-proaches to the pursuit of academic ex-cellence and his winning rapport withstudents, faculty, staff and the commu-nity are defining qualities.
In April 2009, Simmons received theChief Executive Leadership Award fromDistrict 4 of the Council for Advance-ment and Support of Education (CASE),which includes Texas, New Mexico,Arkansas, Oklahoma and Mexico. In2011, he was named Newsmaker of theDecade by the Press Club of SoutheastTexas. Another honor came his way in2012 when Phi Beta Mu InternationalBandmasters Fraternity inducted himinto the Texas Bandmasters Hall ofFame.

Southland Conference
2012 Lamar University Women’s Soccer Guide 63
In an era of considerable change in
intercollegiate athletics, the Southland
Conference continues to be a model of
innovation, stability and consistent
achievement as it celebrates the aca-
demic and athletic accomplishments of
its member institutions.
What began as a small gathering of
college administrators nearly 50 years
ago, the Southland Conference has
transformed itself into a dynamic and re-
spected consortium of 11 member uni-
versities in four states. Beginning with a
historic meeting of five institutions in Dal-
las on March 15, 1963, that included cur-
rent member Lamar University (then
Lamar State College of Technology), the
Southland Conference set on an extraor-
dinary course that has proven success-
ful well into its fifth decade of existence.
The successful transformation con-
tinues. On Oct. 11, 2011, the Southland
Conference announced the addition of
Oral Roberts University, effective for the
2012-13 academic year, marking the
league’s first entry into the state of Okla-
homa and the Tulsa metropolitan area.
Shortly thereafter, on Nov. 21, the South-
land announced the addition of Houston
Baptist University for the 2013-14 aca-
demic year, giving the league an 11th
member and its first institution in the re-
gion’s largest city, home to significant
student-recruitment and alumni bases.
In addition to its two newest mem-
bers, the Southland Conference mem-
bership also consists of the University of
Central Arkansas, Lamar University, Mc-
Neese State University, Nicholls State
University, Northwestern State Univer-
sity, Sam Houston State University,
Southeastern Louisiana University,
Stephen F. Austin State University and
Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.
All told, the membership of the
Southland encompasses approximately
120,000 current students and an alumni
base of nearly 700,000.
The cities of the Southland are di-
verse and progressive, ranging from in-
ternational business and cultural centers
such as Houston, New Orleans, Tulsa
and Little Rock, to the historical cities of
Nacogdoches, Texas, and Natchitoches,
La., to the home of the modern oil boom,
Beaumont, Texas, to the unique Cajun
French cultures found in the Louisiana
cities of Thibodaux and Lake Charles.
The Southland sponsors 17 cham-
pionship sports, all at the NCAA Division
I level. The eight men’s sports include
baseball, basketball, cross country, foot-
ball, golf, tennis, and indoor and outdoor
track and field. The women compete for
nine championships in basketball, cross
country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, in-
door and outdoor track and field, and
volleyball. The conference earns auto-
matic qualification to NCAA champi-
onships in baseball, men’s and women’s
basketball, men’s and women’s cross
country, football, men’s and women’s
golf, women’s soccer, softball, men’s
and women’s tennis, and volleyball.
The Southland Conference, in con-
junction with the city of Frisco, Texas and
Hunt Sports Group, also serves as the
host to the NCAA Division I Football
Championship Game in Frisco, which
has been home to the conference head-
quarters since 2006. The game is played
at Frisco’s FC Dallas Stadium.
The Southland Conference can
point to a number of accomplishments in
all sports.
The Southland Conference has
repeatedly demonstrated its commit-
ment to the academic and athletic suc-
cess of its student-athletes. With the
F.L. McDonald Postgraduate Scholar-
ship Award, the league annually honors
one male and one female scholar-ath-
lete with a stipend for postgraduate
study. The Scholar-Athlete Award is
given to each institution’s male and fe-
male student-athlete with the highest
grade-point average. The Steve Mc-
Carty Citizenship Award, initiated in
2005-06, properly recognizes accom-
plishments off the court for a male and
female student-athlete. Also, student-
athletes with grade-point averages
above 3.0 are honored on the South-
land’s annual All-Academic teams and
Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
While successful on the fields and
courts, the Southland Conference has
repeatedly demonstrated its commit-
ment to the academic and athletic suc-
cess of its student-athletes.
The conference continues to make
great strides in the classroom. During
the last six years, no other Division I con-
ference has improved its Academic
Progress Rate as well as the Southland
Conference has. In fact, in 2009-10, the
Southland ranked 10th among the 31 Di-
vision I leagues in men’s basketball
APR. The academic progress the league
has shown ultimately leads to higher
graduation rates for our student-athletes.
