WHAT IS A GRIFFIN?The Griffin is a legendary creature with the head, beak, and wings of an eagle, the body of a lion, and occasionally, the tail of a serpent or scorpion. Its origin lies somewhere in the Middle East where it is found in the paintings and sculptures of the ancient Babylonians, Assyrians, and Persians. In Greek mythology, they took gold from the stream Arimaspias and, neighbors of the Hyperboreans, they belonged to Zeus. The later Romans used them for decoration and, even in Christian times, the Griffin motif often appears. Griffins were frequently used as gargoyles on medieval churches and buildings.

The 2011 season marks the fifth season in Westminster history. The team has high expectations and goals for 2011 as this is the final year for the program’s first full recruiting class.
Westminster returns 17 players from the 2010 squad that set a school record with 11 wins. Among that group are 11 seniors that have recorded 27 wins during their three years at Westminster. The 16 newcomers include a mixture of experienced JC transfers and talented freshman.
FORWARDSThe top of the Westminster attack in 2011 is anchored by senior Sarah Swenson. Swenson has scored eight goals in her career, in-cluding six game-winners. She put a team-leading 21 shots on goal last season and scored twice.
Look for newcomers Margo Hickman and Justine Jones to play for-ward at key times for the Griffins in 2011. Hickman led the NWAAC with 28 goals for Walla Walla Community College last year. Jones also transferred from Walla Walla after scoring 11 goals with 11 as-sists last year.
MIDFIELDERSThe midfield for the Griffins features the most returning experi-ence. Honorable Mention All-American Heather Hillam scored a team-best seven goals last year while also recording two assists. Hillam attempted 37 shots to lead the griffins and her four game-winning goals ranked 36th in the NAIA.
Vanessa Jordan, Nicole Taylor, Corie Walch and Brianna Wilson also return to the Griffin midfield in 2011. Those four combined to score six goals and record seven assists last year. Jordan in the school’s all-time leader with nine career assists and was named first team all-conference in 2010.
DEFENDERSThe Griffin back line could see the biggest influence of newcomers
in 2011, but it is stabilized by senior Brinna Bennion. An all-confer-ence performer in 2010, Bennion has appeared in 58 games during her Westminster career. Last year she led the team with 1,677 minutes played and anchored a defense that allowed just 0.97 goals per game.
Returners Michelle Erickson, Claire Huntsberger and Sadie Young will compete with newcomers Nicole Carter and Miranda Miner for starting spots. Returning forward Jessica Harris could also drop to the back line to help with the defense.
GOALKEEPERSWith three keepers on the roster this is the deepest this position has been in the program’s history. Dayna Winter-Nolte returns after a year off and should step into the starting role. The starter has played in 36 games at keeper for the Griffins with a career GAA of 1.66. Her 125 career saves are the most in school history.
Lindsay Bekken returns after playing in every game for the Griffins last season. She has a GAA of 1.01 with 79 saves in 2010. Bekken could miss most of 2011 with an injury. That would leave the back-up role to freshman Jesse Eiting. Eiting made 50 saves during her senior season in high school while also playing some midfield.
SCHEDULEThe 2011 schedule may be the toughest slate of games in school history. The Griffins will face five teams that qualified for the 2010 NAIA National Championships and 11 opponents that won at least 10 games last season.
The 15 teams on the schedule combined to go 153-98-32 (.597) last season. Those teams combined to win eight games at the national tournament and no qualifying team lost an opening round game at the event.
Westminster will also face seven teams that are ranked in the NAIA Women’s Soccer Coaches’ Preseason Top 25 Poll.

2011 SEASON PREVIEW
2011 Westminster Women’s Soccer
Tony LeBlanc begins year number five at the helm of the Westminster women’s soccer program. During his tenure, Westminster has compiled a 36-37-4 overall record and advanced to the postseason in three consecutive seasons. The Griffins have also gone 11-11-1 during Frontier Conference action which is the second best record in the conference during that time.
Last season, LeBlanc led the Griffins to a school-record 11 wins as the team finished 11-8-1 overall. The team set another school record with five consecutive wins and also had a stretch of eight wins in nine contests. They went 460 minutes without allowing a goal at one stretch and finished 12th nationally with 10 shutouts. They advanced to the semi-finals of the Unaffiliated Conference Tournament with a 1-0 win over Minot State in the quarterfinals. It was the third straight year the team had qualified for the postseason tournament and the second straight year they won a first round game.
The 2009 season saw LeBlanc guide the team to a 9-10-1 overall record. The team earned the No. 2 seed in the Frontier Conference tournament after posting a 3-2-1 record in conference games. They advanced to the tournament championship game with a 2-1 win against Rocky Mountain in the semi-finals. The season ended with a 5-3-1 stretch to match the school record of nine wins set during the 2007 season.
In 2008, Westminster finished year number two of the program with a 7-11-1 overall record. They finished the Frontier Conference season at 2-4 with a third place finish. The team qualified for the Frontier Conference Tournament, where they lost to Rocky Mountain College, 1-0, in the semi-finals.
The 2008 team matched a school record with four consecutive wins, all coming at home. In fact, the Griffins were good at home all season posting a 6-2 record on Dumke Field. They outscored the opposition 15-8 in home games and recorded two shutouts.
In 2007, LeBlanc guided the team to an impressive 9-8-1 record in the first year of the program. The Griffins placed second in the Frontier Conference with a 3-2-0 record and went 4-2-1 on Dumke Field.

Prior to playing at Westminster, LeBlanc was a two-time member of the Utah State Select team and a three-year varsity letterman at East High School. He was a part of the first Utah Select team to capture the Western Regionals and ultimately finished 3rd at the 2005 State Select National Championships.
LeBlanc’s coaching experience varies from the collegiate, high school, and youth levels; he served time as the boys Varsity Assistant/JV Head Coach at East High School and helped them into the state finals and win the State Championship in 2006 for the first time in school history. During the 2006 season, LeBlanc served as Assistant Women’s Soccer Coach at BYU-Hawaii where he was instrumental in forming and organizing a first year NCAA Division II women’s soccer program that finished second in the Pac West Conference with a 12-4 record. LeBlanc also has coached club soccer for the girls Rush 93 premier soccer team and currently holds a D license.

2011 Westminster Women’s Soccer
The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) is a completely autonomous association currently administering programs of intercollegiate athletics for approximately 330 fully accredited colleges and universities of moderate enrollment.
The fundamental tenet of the NAIA is that intercollegiate athletics is an integral part of the total educational program of the institution. This belief is strongly reflected in the governing documents, activities and organizational structure of the Association.
Established in 1940 as the National Association of Intercollegiate Basketball (NAIB), the Association expanded to include other programs in 1952. The NAIA became the first intercollegiate sports governing body to provide championship opportunities for both men andwomen when the women’s program was established on August 1, 1980.
The purpose of the NAIA is to promote education and development of students through intercollegiate athletic participation. Member institutions, although varied and diverse, share a common commitment to high standards and the principle that athletes serve as an integral part of education.
The NAIA embraces the concept of the student and recognizes the importance of the individuality of each member institution, the value of the conference and regional structure, and the benefits of membership in a national association.
The NAIA Champions of Character program is an educational outreach initiative which emphasizes the tenets of character and integrity, not only for NAIA college students, but for younger students, coaches and parents in our communities.
Coaches, parents, administrators and community partners all have a role in developing students of character. The NAIA Champions of Character program brings them training, guidelines and behavior models to create positive environments that promote personal growth and fun sport activity.

The Frontier Conference was organized in 1935 with four of the eight existing colleges as charter members. Carroll College joined in 1938. For a 10-year period, from 1974 to 1984, the College of Great Falls, now the University of Great Falls competed in the conference. Great Falls rejoined the Frontier in 1999-2000. For a short time, MSU-Billings (then Eastern Montana College) was a member of the league.
New members in 1998-99 were Lewis-Clark State College of Lewiston, Idaho and Westminster College of Salt Lake City, Utah. Dickinson State was approved for membership starting with the 2012-13 season while Southern Oregon will join as a football member at the same time.
The conference now consists of Carroll College, Dickinson State College, Eastern Oregon University (football only), University of Great Falls, Lewis-Clark State College, Montana State University-Northern, Montana Tech, University of Montana Western, Rocky Mountain College, Southern Oregon University (football only) and Westminster College.
The purpose of the Frontier Conference is to encourage, promote, sponsor and control athletic competition among participating colleges as an integral part of the total educational process. With their motto, “The Best in academics and athletics,” members compete for conference championships in football, basketball, golf, volleyball, soccer, and cross country.

2011 Westminster Women’s Soccer36
For the first time since 2007 the Westminster women’s soccer team finished the year with a wining record. The 2010 Griffins finished the season at 11-8-1 and advanced to the Unaffiliated Conference semi-finals.
Westminster struggled out of the gate going just 1-4-1 in the first six games of the year. They went to overtime in four of those six games and twice lost with less than two minutes remaining in the extra period. Westminster would then run off wins in eight of the next nine games including a school-record five-game winning streak. The Griffins defeated Minot State in the opening round of the conference tournament before falling to Carroll in the semi-finals.
The Griffins set a school record with 10 shutouts and ranked 12th nationally in that category. They earned those 10 shutouts despite making just 4.05 saves per game and finished the year allowing just one goal per game. Lindsay Bekken finished with a 1.01 goals against average and was named the Frontier Conference defensive player of the week three times. She became the first player in school history to be named the NAIA National Player of the Week on September 13.

2011 Westminster Women’s Soccer
It’s your heart. The engine that
won’t quit. Not here. Not now.
It’s what drives you from the first
moment of the game to the final
screaming second. Because
when you’re an athlete, you live
for play. Student-athletes in NAIA
colleges and universities across
the country play their hearts out
every time they put on their school
colors and step up to compete.
They are part of an
organization that understands an
athlete’s need to dig deep, to bond
and to go beyond. That same
drive is at the heart of the NAIA,
where the sweat never dries, the
turf is still shredded, and the court
is always scuffed with a thousand
sole marks.
Hear that pounding?

In September 2006, Shay Wyatt was hired as Director of Athletics at Westminster College. Under his guidance the intercollegiate athletic program has experienced unprecedented growth and success. Wyatt’s leadership has led to increases in the number of sports offered, enrollment, academic and athletic success, departmental budget, community service efforts amongst student-athletes, fundraising, corporate partners, ticket revenue, attendance at athletic events, coaches and support staff and strategic planning efforts for the Athletics Department.
In addition, Westminster Athletics has experienced facility enhancements, improved eligibility and compliance processes, branding and website technologies, licensing and apparel agreements have been established and a student-athlete advisory committee and student fan group were formed. Wyatt has served on various institutional committees and is a member of the National Administrative Committee of the NAIA which sets policy and procedures for the national organization.
Prior to Westminster College, Wyatt served as Director of Sports Marketing and Bruin Club at Salt Lake Community College in 2006. While only at SLCC for a short period of time, he secured the athletic department’s largest ever corporate sponsorship.
From 2001-2006, Wyatt served as the Wildcat Club Executive Director at Weber State University. He was responsible for the development efforts for the athletics department including annual giving, major gifts, endowments, special events and donor relations. The Wildcat Club experienced an increase in annual giving totals each year Wyatt was at the helm, including a 17% increase in 2004. He was instrumental in securing more than $350,000 in football suites, club seating and basketball preferred seating.
Wyatt made his way to Weber State via Utah Valley State College where he served as the Director of Development for Athletics from 1999-2001. He was responsible for creating the fund raising arm of the athletic department, serving as the first-ever development director at UVSC. In this role he defined all aspects of annual giving and major gift opportunities. Upon his arrival at UVSC he increased annual giving by 30% in his first year. Payne Gymnasium houses the newly renovated Griffins strength and athletic training facilities, auxiliary basketball court, locker rooms, and offices for men’s and women’s lacrosse and men’s soccer. Built during the term of President Herbert W. Reherd (1913–1939), it was named after the president of the Board of Trustees and manager of the local J.C. Penney Company; groundbreaking was July 1928 and dedication January 11, 1929.
Though the college worried that it was frivolous to spend money on a gymnasium, the facility, designed by architect Walter E. Ware, provided badly needed recreation for the school and groups in the entire Sugar House area. It was added to and remodeled in 1970 under President Manford Shaw (1968–1976), and has housed the basketball and volleyball programs, dances, speakers, luncheons, career fairs, orientations, and a variety of other cultural and social student events—including being the practice facility for the Utah Jazz from 1979 to May 1999.
BEHNKEN FIELD HOUSE
The Dolores Dore Eccles Heatlh, Wellness and Athletic Center is a three-story, 84,500-square-foot facility, completed in 2006, that houses Griffins Athletics and includes a swimming pool, full complement of fitness equipment, a weight room and exercise studio, and a technically challenging, 46-foot climbing wall. Above a field house that holds 1,200 spectators is a suspended running track with a high-tech surface and corner windows with views. The field house includes an athletic training room, locker rooms, team meeting rooms, coaches offices, and equipment storage space for our popular Griffin intercollegiate sports, including men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, women’s soccer, and women’s volleyball.

DUMKE FIELD
Dumke Field, on the site of the Dane Hansen Stadium, was opened October 2, 1949, by college president Robert D. Steele (1939–1952). It was a gift of the George Hansen family in memory of a son and brother, Lt. Dane Hansen, Class of 1940, who lost his life in World War II. Having had seating for 1,200 attendants, the stadium had been the college soccer and activities field, commencement green, and later a paved parking facility. In fall 2005, it was transformed into a parking structure, with an elevated artificial turf athletic field on top. This facility is now the home field for the Griffins men’s and women’s soccer and men’s lacrosse teams.

WESTMINSTER COLLEGEWestminster is a nationally recognized, comprehensive liberal arts college. With a broad array of graduate and undergraduate programs, Westminster is distinguished by its unique environment for learning. Westminster prepares students for success through active and engaged learning, real world experiences, and its vibrant campus community. Westminster’s unique location, adjacent to the Rocky Mountains and to the dynamic city of Salt Lake, further enriches the college experience.
While we’re proud that Westminster is consistently ranked as a “Top Tier” college and recognized on the list of “Great Schools” by the U.S.News & World Report, and that Westminster was named “Best in the West” by the Princeton Review, we hope you’ll come to campus, whether you’re a high school student or one of our alumni, and experience the Westminster community for yourself.
ACADEMICSWestminster offers more than 70 academic programs, including 34 majors, from accounting and international business to nursing and sociology. The most popular majors are business, nursing, psychology, and education. In addition, the college offers a variety of minors and 10 graduate programs. About 95 percent of the students go to graduate school or are employed within six months of graduation. The nursing program has a 100 percent placement rate. In addition to Westminster’s successful outcomes, a Utah Foundation study found that Westminster graduates have among the highest starting salaries of any university graduates in the state. These high starting salaries were attributed in part to the fact that nearly 70 percent of students complete an internship before they graduate.
Students choose Westminster College for many reasons, including our intense focus on individual students and their learning, the combination of liberal education and professional studies, our active learning experiences, dynamic campus environment, and the real world experiences we offer to ensure that our students are prepared to succeed in a rapidly changing world.
HISTORYWestminster College has played a pivotal role in the educational heritage of the intermountain area. Founded in 1875 as the Salt Lake Collegiate Institute, a preparatory school, Westminster first offered college classes in 1897 as Sheldon Jackson College. Named in honor of its primary benefactor, Sheldon Jackson, the college operated for many years on the Collegiate Institute campus in downtown Salt lake City. Gradually the institute became identified as the college preparatory department, and high school classes continued to be an integral part of the curriculum until 1945. In 1902, college trustees adopted the new name, Westminster. Moving to its present location in 1911, Westminster became the first accredited two-year junior college in the intermountain area. In 1935 Westminster modified its curriculum to qualify as a four-year junior college and in 1949 became a four-year liberal arts institution offering baccalaureate
degrees in the arts and sciences.
Today Westminster exists as a fully independent, privately funded, nondenominational, comprehensive liberal arts institution of higher learning with selected graduate programs, meeting the West’s educational needs as it has since 1875.
