2011 New Collection
Celebrating 60 Years of the IKEA Catalogue
Part of what makes IKEA unique is a deeply personal connection with design, nurturing ideas as they grow and develop from in-house inception through to customer appreciation. At the core of this approach are the strong partnerships IKEA has fostered with more than 170 talented designers from across the globe, as well as the creation of a truly diverse product range.
The 2011 IKEA catalogue, arriving this August, tells the story of these designs, focusing in particular on the memories, items and objects that make a house into a home. Both the catalogue and the IKEA website offer inspiration and ideas on how to organize, store and protect those valuable mementos that matter most; because any space can be beautiful.
In celebration of the iconic catalogue’s 60-year anniversary, the 2011 IKEA Collection highlights four new trends - Blue, Architectural, Folkloric and New Utility - in addition to thousands of fabulous everyday solutions that will bring happiness and inspiration to every home.
BLUE:Blue is making waves in 2011, as the trend colour of the year. With shades ranging from turquoise, indigo and cobalt to the deepest navy, blue evokes ice, water and sky. While dark blue can represent knowledge, power, integrity, and seriousness (as in the classic navy suit), lighter blues and aqua tones represent days with clear, blue skies, happiness and optimism.

NEW UTILITY:This industrial style, popularized by today’s residential homes in reclaimed industrial spaces, is all about utility chic. Exposed parts and simple materials like wood, and steel define the look. Artwork that references vintage signs is an inexpensive way to add personality and a sense of history to a room.

“Africa was my inspiration when I designed the VILMIE collection. I was particularly drawn to the traditional body adornment; face and body painting, piercing and jewellery. And this was my basis for the simple, bold patterns in the collection. I wanted the collection to feel modern. I also wanted it to be easy to coordinate the different products – both with others in the collection and with solid-coloured products. I hope you enjoy the collection in your home.”

“With the BARNSLIG series I wanted to make children happy, as well as stimulate their imagination and creativity. I believe colours have a positive effect on us; that’s why I based the entire series on colours and contrasts. And I wasn’t interested in capturing reality as it is, but as it might look like in a child’s imagination. Everything doesn’t have to be so perfect in their world - it’s okay if something is a little crooked, or someone has big feet or a cute, round belly. The imperfect is just what’s charming and lovable.”

“My idea when I designed BLOMMIG was to make vases with organic, irregular shapes to suit organic, irregular flowers. I worked with a highly skilled glassblower, who interpreted my sketches, instructions and cheers of enthusiasm. Together we succeeded in getting just the non-perfect look with round shapes and slightly slanting edges we were after. I’m also very fond of the green colour, which is so – well, glassy.”

”It’s easy to create a warm atmosphere in your home using candles. One candle can be all you need, but my tip is to mix many different candles and candle holders. The ÅRYD series comprises candle holders for all typesof candles – and each candle holder in turned wood has a unique height and shape. By combining several of them you can easily create exciting and personal lighting arrangements.”

Join us behind the scenes! The IKEA Catalogue artwork is produced by IKEA Communications AB (ICOM) in Älmhult, Sweden. At ICOM, 260 people work with production of everything from assembly instructions to TV commercials, the IKEA website and the Catalogue.

Where interior design meets cultureSome people live in spacious homes and have a preference for generous, dark furniture. Others live in tight quarters and want a home that’s multifunctional and clutter-free. Preferences and needs differ from country to country, and as a global retailer, IKEA adapts the communication accordingly.
So who creates these homes shown in the catalogue, brochures and website, and how do they learn what people in places like Shangai or Krakow need or want? The answer is a team of interior designers based in Älmhult, Sweden – the place where all global communication is produced. While working most of the year with planning and designing rooms, the interior designers also get to travel to different parts of the world, visiting real, everyday homes. On location, the interior designers gather all kinds of knowledge linked to a country’s culture; traditions, values, challenges and dreams. And this knowledge is key in creating authentic homes that readers around the world can identify with - offering ideas that really inspire and help people to create a better everyday life for themselves and their families.
