A growing conviction that the United States is headed to-ward a recession sent Wall Street plunging Tuesday, with weakretail sales figures and a disappointing quarterly report fromCitigroup Inc. exacerbating investors’ pessimistic mood.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 277.04, or 2.17%, to12,501.11.

Broader stock indicators also lost ground. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index dropped 35.30, or 2.49%, to

1380.95, and the Nasdaq composite index lost 60.71, or 2.45%,closing at 2417.59.

Meanwhile, bond prices rose. The yield on the benchmark10-year Treasury note, which moves opposite its price, fell to3.69%, close to its lowest point since March 2004 and down from3.77% on Monday.

Pessimism plagues markets

get through the rest of the cur-rent downturn, which Jacksonsays is in its third and final year.

Jackson predicted consum-ers won’t feel confident enoughto start buying in earnest againuntil the nation’s leaders pass aserious economic stimuluspackage, the housing marketbegins to correct itself and anew U.S. president has beenelected.

“People want certainty,” hesaid. “They want to know who isgoing to lead us through this pe-riod.”

Jackson, who stopped tochat briefly with U.S. Rep. JohnDingell, D-Mich., while touringthe show, said the nation willknow it’s on the road to recov-ery when the pickup truck mar-ket starts to grow again with-out heavy incentives.

Full-size pickup trucks areconsidered strong indicators ofeconomic growth, closely tiedto the housing market.

Jackson said Ford Motor Co.and Chrysler LLC are well suit-

ed to benefit from that eventuallift, with the new Ford F-150and Dodge Ram coming to mar-ket later this year.

“Ford did a great job withthe F-150. They nailed it,” hesaid. “It will remain the best-selling truck in America.”

But Jackson said GeneralMotors is the Detroit automak-er best prepared to benefitwhen the U.S. economy startsturning around.

Jackson said GM’s pipelineis full of wonderful new prod-ucts, thanks to the leadership ofVice Chairman Bob Lutz.

What’s more, he said, the au-tomaker’s product revival —highlighted by the ChevroletMalibu, North American Car ofthe Year — is also on steadyfooting that will carry it into thefuture without the rollercoas-ter cycles of the past.

“They’ve done it,” Jacksonsaid of GM. “This is the realdeal.”

Chrysler this fall is expectedto dramatically make over theinteriors of the Jeep Compassand Patriot, vehicles that werelaunched within the past 16months, people familiar withthe plans told the Free Press.

One Chrysler executive saidthe improvements illustrate achange in the company’s cul-ture to quickly fix somethingthat they know needs improve-ment instead of waiting severalyears for a scheduled redesign.

Several industry analystswho have seen inside the newRam at the auto show are im-pressed but some think that theimprovements still do not beatthe Ford F-series pickup, whichwas also redesigned and un-veiled at the auto show Sunday.

“I think it puts them on parwith GM, but in my mind Fordis still the benchmark for interi-ors,” Erich Merkle, an analystwith IRN Inc., said of the Raminterior. “Ford had a phenome-nal interior … since the last re-design and the one they haveout there now is even better.”

Still, Merkle had praise forthe Ram’s interior. “I think it’sa dramatic improvement fromwhere it was,” he said. “Thestuff they had before was sohard and plasticky. I like thefact that it is softer.”

But the progress is incom-plete, said Michael Robinet, vice president for global fore-casting at CSM Worldwide.

“This Ram shows thatthey’ve made a step forwardbut they still have a ways to go,”he said.

Brian Moody, Edmunds.comsenior road test editor, praised

the interior: The gauges, for in-stance, have a more preciselook and chrome accents.

“The color choices also werevery pleasing, textures werevery nice and the things youwould touch did not feel overlyplasticky,” Moody said. “Thereis going to be plastic inside a carno matter what — that’s OK.But it didn’t feel cheap or overlyplastic.”

Chrysler has taken criticismover the past year for its interi-ors. Los Angeles Times criticDan Neil, for example, rippedthe new Sebring convertible, writing it had “deprived plasticinteriors” and that vehicle was“cast in plastic worthy of a Chi-nese water pistol.”

ConsumerReports.org hadsimilar complaints about theSebring Touring Sedan andother new Chryslers. “The Se-bring’s interior looks cheap andinsubstantial,” the magazines

said. “Almost all of the touch-able surfaces are hard. Panel fithas large, uneven gaps and un-finished edges.”

Chrysler is aware of suchcriticisms.

“Quality is always some-thing I have striven to achievebut anything I release from mydesign department in clay is ofthe highest quality … It issculpted to the highest qualityand then it is released into therest of the system,” Creed said.“And it’s in the rest of the sys-tem … that things don’t happenexactly as we intended. Whatwe’ve done now is take chargeand realize that we all have towork together.”

Designers are working withsales and marketing people toidentify the so-called DNA ofthe interior and riding herd ov-er the projects to ensure the de-sign stays as intended, Chrys-ler executives said.

“There are things that whenwe release them, they’ve got tostay on the vehicle until the ve-hicles come into productionand not find out that somebodysomewhere took something out… to save money or whatever,”Creed said.

He seemed defensive follow-ing criticisms of the Sebring. “Iwas responsible for the interi-ors of the Sebring,” he said.“Again there are gaps on theproduction vehicle that werenever released from the designdepartment, where supplierscouldn’t achieve what they saidthey could achieve. Therewasn’t enough oversight at var-ious stages in the process.”

“But I still think it is a verydramatic interior and I am veryproud of both the car and the in-terior.”
