“We give thanks.”
A Message from our Pastor This Sunday many will celebrate Grandparents Day. Grandparents Day is a relatively new holiday. I imagine that nowhere near as many flowers or ties are bought as for Mother’s or Father’s Day. Grandparents play a special role for us, even if we only have distant
memories of them from childhood. I treasure fond memories of visits to grandparent’s houses, which included rides on tractors, grandma’s legendary mashed potatoes and gravy, and of course a place where I was never told no when I asked for something from the candy dish. If your grandparents are still alive, how long has it been since you called or visited? Today is a good day to remember to reach out to them. If they have gone, remember them in a prayer, such as this Grandparents Day blessing:
God of our ancestors, we thank you for our children and our children’s children.
They are reminders from you about how precious life can be.
We humbly ask for wisdom and patience as we take pride and wonder in our grandchildren.
Those of us who now pray to you also seek your blessing upon these men and women who are our grandparents or who act in place of grandparents.
Bless all the children and their parents and grandparents with your abundant grace.
We ask all this through the intercession of Saints Joachim and Anne, parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary, patron saints of grandparents, in the power of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

ACTS XXIX CALLS FOR A NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER AND FASTING
SEPTEMBER 24, 2020 Fr. John Riccardo and the team of the Detroit-based non-profit apostolate ACTS XXIX are calling for a National Day of Prayer and Fasting on September 24, 2020. “Looking at all that’s happening in our country right now, it seems we’re in need of a lot of things,” says Fr. Riccardo, ACTS XXIX Executive Director. “Policy and law are crucial, to be sure. But as important as these are, they can’t fix the root problem. The real problem of American culture today is that our hearts are messed up. Only God can fix the human heart, and He loves doing that.” The idea for the entire nation devoting a single day to prayer and fasting grew out of the weekly podcast series produced by ACTS XXIX, You Were Born for This with Fr. John Riccardo. An episode in mid-July about the need for courage in these times sparked a great response from listeners. While working on a follow-up episode, Fr. John was led to President Abraham Lincoln’s Presidential Proclamations where Lincoln called for a day of fasting, prayer, and public humiliation. Mary Guilfoyle, ACTS XXIX Associate Director, also felt led in prayer to call for a day of prayer and fasting and urged that ACTS XXIX take the lead. “This is not about politics or any particular social movement or even the November election,” Fr. Riccardo cautions. “This is about asking for God’s mercy on our nation and for the healing of our hearts—all of our hearts, starting with mine.” His hope is that the entire country, Christians, Jews, Muslims, and all people of good will, would set September 24 aside as a true holy day, forego food until dinner, and pray for the conversion of hearts. For more information about ACTS XXIX, their mission, and their call for September 24 as a National Day of Prayer and Fasting, visit ActsXXIX.org.
Catechetical Sunday 2020 Catechists to be commissioned
Weekend of September 19 & 20 "I Received from the Lord what I also Handed on to You"
The 2020 Catechetical Sunday theme is taken from St. Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, “I Received from the Lord what I also Handed on to You.” The theme focuses on the primary substance of catechesis, which is an invitation to a whole new life given by Christ Himself. It emphasizes that living faith necessitates movement, inspiring all those who hear the Word to share it as witnesses of the true and living God. This year, we are invited to focus on catechist formation, as catechists are the instruments through which many come to encounter Christ and hear this invitation. Catechetical Sunday is Sun. Sept. 20, 2020; catechists will be commissioned at all Masses the weekend of Sat. Sept. 19 & Sun. Sept. 20, 2020.
