Triple Beam Balance

How to use a triple beam balance…

1. Zero the balance

      a) Slide all of the masses to their zero point.

       b) Use the adjustment screw to level off the pointer if neccesary.

You must repeat this procedure to "zero" the balance every time you use it.

2. Never put a chemical directly on the balance pan. Put it on filter paper or a weighing dish. Remember to mass the paper or container before adding the substance.

3. Move the masses along the beams beginning with the largest mass first. Keep moving the masses until the pointer is level.

Bunsen Burner

1. Make sure the gas handle is in the “off” position (perpendicular to the wall).

2. Connect the hose to the gas outlet.

3. Turn the gas handle to the fully open position (parallel to the wall).

4. Open the gas adjustment at the base of the burner by several turns to give good gas flow through the burner.

5. Light the burner by holding a match to the side of the mouth of the burner. (If you stick the match in the middle of the gas stream, the flame is usually blown out before the burner lights.)

6. Adjust the amount of air in the flame by turning the barrel of the burner clockwise. A flame with too little air mixed in it has a light blue, bushy appearance and more air must be mixed in by unscrewing the barrel (counter-clockwise).
