Nixon’s Re-election 1972

• George McGovern and George Wallace run for the Democrats

• Wallace is shot by Arthur Bremer in Maryland (for fame) and paralyzed

• Nixon’s Secretary of State Kissinger announces “Peace is at Hand”

• Nixon wins by a landslide

Work towards a cease-fire 1972

• Kissinger negotiates with N. Vietnam and reaches an agreement.

• S. Vietnam’s president doesn’t agree so the deal falls through

• Nixon begins bombing N. Vietnam for 2 weeks. Known as the Christmas Bombing.

• In 1973 a new deal is reached.

The war ends 1973 peace agreement.• January 271973, a cease fire is reached.• U.S. pledges to withdraw and help rebuild Vietnam.• Also includes a prisoner exchange.• U.S. leaves and South Vietnam is still non-

communist.• In 1975 the North invades again and captures all of

South Vietnam. The U.S. watches but doesn’t get involved.

• Domino Theory proves false, no other countries become communist in SE Asia

As the North closed in around Saigon in 1975 thousands of Americans had to be evacuated from the U.S. Embassy. We had

to keep the South Vietnamese out also

• The wall now has 58,253 names inscribed on it (8 women)…the number is still growing.

• The wall is visited by over 3 million people each year.

• The wall is reflective for a reason…why?• Wall starts out at 8 inches and reaches 10

feet at the middle. It points towards the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial.

• 21 year old student at Yale when she designed it.

• When asked to participate in the design contest she thought that a memorial already existed and knew very little about the wall.

• The three men stand looking at the wall

• There is one hispanic man, one black, and one white.

• This statue was erected after the wall to appease people unhappy with Lin’s design.
