What was the Renaissance?

• A time of political, social, economic and cultural change

• Reawakened interest in classical Greek and Roman learning• Shift from religion and spirituality towards current

human experiences

• Humanism- used past Greek and Roman culture to understand their current world

Why Italy?

1.Italy was the center of the Roman Empire- it’s location made it central to European and African trade; brought new ideas

2. Architectural remains to study- Coins, buildings, statues…3. Roman Catholic Church

- supporter of the arts

• City-states– Ran by rich & powerful families, dominated by

wealthy merchants
