LOCAL PET CARE BUSINESS CELEBRATES 1 YEAR & LAUNCHES
GROOMING SERVICES! Golden Paws Pet Care Services celebrated their 1 year anniversary in November for their “At Your Home” Ser-vice Program! “At Your Home” Services schedule a team-member to travel to your home to provide Dog Walks, Waste Pick-Ups, Nail Trims, or Day Visits.“ These are currently available to Evans, Eden, North Collins, Lakev-iew, Hamburg, and Orchard Park. As of July 2012, this woman-owned business expanded to provide Dog Daycare, Private Dog Boarding, Saturday Playgroups, and Grooming from their new location at 1759 Sturgeon Point Road in Derby, NY. In December, they welcomed a new groomer and are now providing all aspects of affordable pet grooming! The Better Business Bureau just recently accredited Golden Paws on their 1 year anniversary for providing quality, dependable, and excellent service throughout Western New York. Deemed WNY’s safest Dog Daycare and Boarding Facility, Golden Paws provides each guest with personalized attention and affection, basic training, and socialization, as well as free daycare for boarding guests! What makes this company stand out is that dogs are never left unattended in groups, and the facility is staffed at a ratio of 1 employee for every 3 dogs in their pro-gram—a 5 star standard that most companies overlook. Golden Paws only accepts up to 5 dogs in their boarding program at one time, believing that their smaller size and personalization reduces stress levels that typically esca-late from large, crowded, and noisy kennels.

LUDLOW PUBLISHES FIRST NOVEL David Ludlow, of Angola, has announced the publish-ing of his new vampire novel, which is now available on the Amazon Kindle. “Queen Lilly Fly By Night!” has been written under his pen name of Robin Arthur Jessup, a name he constructed from several sources - Robin for Robin Hood, his favorite story; Arthur, for his dad; and Jessup, for an old friend. There are a lot of vampire books published, but Mr. Ludlow’s book is genuinely different, as the heroine, Lilly, is disabled. Mr. Ludlow also is disabled, having suffered a stroke, but took up the challenge of making his storyline believable with Lilly, a vampire queen in a mo-torized wheelchair, needing to figure out a plan to defeat a powerful vampire. There are many surprises in this book. It took Mr. Ludlow over 2 years to go from idea to promoting his material on Amazon. Though it is only on Kindle now, he plans to have some print copies made if the sales support doing so. The initial reviews have been very good. Hilbert College will be mentioning “Queen Lilly Fly By Night!” in their next alumni magazine due out in a few weeks. David grew up in Angola. He is a 1973 graduate of Lake Shore Central, a 1979 graduate of Hilbert College, and a 1981 graduate of Fredonia State. He also is an en-listed Navy and commissioned Army veteran. Writing has always been a hobby of his.

COmmunity newsCHAMBER VISITS GOYA
Members of the Evans-Brant Chamber of Commerce were the guests of Robert Drago, Sr., President of Goya Foods Great Lakes, for a tour of the bean processing facil-ity located at 200 S. Main St. Originating as Bison Can-ning Co. in 1927, Goya Foods Inc. purchased Bison Can-ning Co.in 1991. Shortly after the purchase, this location became known as Goya Foods Great Lakes and changed from a private label canner to an internal supplier of Goya brand canned bean products. At the time of our visit the plant was producing canned chick peas, (a/k/a garbanzo beans) at the rate of 900 cans a minute. In addition to chick peas, this location processes twenty-six varieties of beans which include organic, low sodium and kosher. Goya Great Lakes converts over 33 million pounds of dry beans into 5.3 million cases (127,000,000 cans) of canned beans. Its automated processing line is capable of running 1,000 cans of product per minute. Processing of the beans requires soaking to hydrate the bean and state of the art optical sorting to remove any for-eign and extraneous matter. Once the can is full of prod-uct a lid is attached and the can will be, X-rayed. This process is to confirm that foreign and extraneous matter are not present. Cans are now ready to enter the cooker. When the cooking cycle is complete, the cans will exit the cookers and are conveyed to the packaging line where labels are applied. Subsequently, the cans are checked for label registration and non-labeled cans before they are au-tomatically tray packed and palletized. Once palletizing is complete the pallets are automatically shrink wrapped and transferred to the warehouse for shipment. In addition to the processing plant is the Distribution Center which is located at 275 S. Main St., across the street. The 40,000 square foot facility was developed to improve service to Goya’s 900 retail customers in up-state New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Eastern Canada. Goya currently has 1600 products and specialty items. Members attending the tour included Chamber presi-dent Michelle Parker and husband Mark, treasurer Nancy Furey and husband Bill, Education chair Darlene Mc-Donough, Ed.D., and husband Bob, board member Antoi-nette Forth, chamber member Bob Biondi, Susan Johnson from the office of State Senator Patrick Gallivan, guests Bruce Rust, Kathleen Buckley, and Barb Wenke, and members Hon. Howard M. "Hub" Frawley, mayor of An-gola, and his wife Marge. The next chamber event is the election mixer on Tues-day, November 27 at the American Legion, from 5 pm to 7 pm.

In Loving Memory ofLinda Rubeck
12/27/54 ~ 12/3/09 Sadly, yet quickly, another year has come to pass since we lost you, however you live on each day in our hearts and memories. Although the pain still lingers, we are able to smile at the memories of you that we all hold most dear. While we are sad that you will not be with us to share in the milestones yet to come, we know that you are with us in some way. Every memory we share and every story we tell brings you back to life. No one will ever be able to forget your style, class and wit. We know how proud you would be of your three grandchildren: Max, Sidney and Chloe. Your memory will live on with them each day.
We miss you now and always,Linda’s Family

IMMACULATA ACADEMY STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN NATIONAL MIX IT UP AT
LUNCH DAY For the fourth year, Immaculata Academy students par-ticipated in the national event Mix It Up At Lunch Day, where students switch lunch tables to meet new friends and find commonalities with their classmates. The event helps to combat bullying by promoting friendship, respect and unity. At lunch, students were assigned new tables to encour-age interaction with other students in their class and in other grade levels. Each table had a character trait as-signed to it that helps to promote good character for the students to reflect upon. Also on the tables was a list of “ice breaker” questions to help get conversations going and the students to get to know each other better. The theme of this year’s event was, “iAccept” and mu-sic chosen by the students was played throughout their lunch period to symbolize spreading tolerance “one note at a time”. Students also took turns signing a large mp3 player constructed out of poster board to show their com-mitment. The event, with more than 2 million participants across the country, creates opportunities for students to interact with classmates, while building school spirit, rais-ing awareness about social boundaries, and encouraging students to work together to branch out and break social boundaries. VETERAN VISITS SOUTHTOWNS CATHOLIC SCHOOL
On Friday, November 9th, the Southtown Catholic School was thrilled to honor decorated Vietnam Veteran James Trembath of Angola, NY and listened intently as he explained what a Veteran is and how important it is to remember and honor them. Mr. Trembath served with the US Army in Vietnam during its most turbulent time and the students had many questions about army life and how hard it was to be a 19 year old in another country. Mr. Trembath was happy to tell the students of the importance of the US Army, the oldest and largest branch of the ser-vice. He was also glad that each and every student knew the Pledge of Allegiance. The students left with a promise to thank a veteran this weekend in honor of Veterans Day. Mr. Trembath is a member of Newell-Faulkner Post 880 Eden, New York and in honor of Veterans Day, Veterans and active personnel were honored at the Eden School and had breakfast with the Veterans at Eden Heights. GERMAN STUDENTS VISIT SUNY FREDONIA
So what do some Lake Shore Sophomores and a group of SUNY Fredonia undergraduates have in common? Deutsch that’s what! These students share an interest and desire to learn German language. Recently students enrolled in German 3 at Lake Shore Sr. High School travelled to SUNY Fredonia for a presenta-tion by the German 116 class there. Students in German 116 used their German language skills to make German cultural posters. Each poster told the story of some aspect of German culture. Topics ranged from Die Bundesliga (soccer) to Das Schulsystem (school system), Dichter und Denker (poets and thinkers) to Das Flugzeug (airplanes in German History). Each poster also had an activity that the visitors had to complete. This could only be done with information from the poster. Lake Shore students rotated from poster to poster, completing the activities and inter-acting with the College German students who hosted the event and provided information to their guests.Following the presentation, Lake Shore students got a taste for College life in the dining area of the newly re-opened William’s Center and took a tour of the Campus with student ambassadors! As students rode home, more than one was heard to say “Ich will an der Uni Fredonia lernen”- or at least its English equivalent “I’d like to study at Fredonia”
AUTHOR DIANE SMITH VISITS SCSSouthtowns Catholic School seventh and eighth grade students were a captivated audience when author Diane Smith came to visit our classroom. It was enlightening for them to hear about how much time, effort and love goes into the writing of a book. Her book is called "The Window to Earth". It is a children's book about the love that shines through the heavens into your heart as you sleep. In the spring, the students will read her novel, The Catacombs. Mrs. Smith grew up in Angola. Now she lives in Mountain Lakes, NJ with her husband and two boys. Pictured: Diane Smith, Max Barney, Zack Barney & Ja-cob Barney.

ACADEMY OF BUSINESS & FINANCE STUDENTS TRAVEL TO THE
“WINDY CITY” In October the Lake Shore High School Academy of Business and Finance students had the opportunity to visit Chicago for an educational and fun tour. Students visited the Chicago Board of Trade, the Federal Reserve Building, Soldier Field, The Shedd Aquarium, and the State Building. They viewed the beautiful city from the 93rd floor of the John Hancock building and sailed on the Spirit of Chicago dinner cruise liner to see the sights along the Navy Pier. The students learned about the his-tory of this beautiful city and the reconstruction process after the Great Fire. They enjoyed some Chicago style pizza at the original “Gino’s Pizzeria”, did some shop-ping and sightseeing. Chicago architecture is something to behold! Students had fun taking pictures of themselves under “The Bean”, a very unique piece of artwork in the heart of Chicago. Upon returning to school, each student prepared a speech to present in their public speaking class on one of the Chicago Landmarks. These opportunities help to enhance the educational process that takes place in the classroom. From history to economics to business and art students experienced it all!

FUN FALL FAMILY NIGHT The Special Education Department hosted a Fall Fam-ily Night for students and their families on November 8th at the Middle School. This fabulous fall festival was packed with activities and gave everyone a chance to con-nect and have fun with their own families and with others. The kids had a blast with Teri-Okie the Clown and her amazing balloon creations! The Cookie Decorating and Face Painting were popular activities too. And when the need for calm and quiet was seen, the Sensory Room was the place to be!

SOUTHTOWNS CATHOLIC SCHOOL DIORAMAS
Mrs. Kathy Walters Grade 2 class made habitat diora-ma's with their favorite animal. Each student had to pick an animal and then do research. They had to answer ques-tions like; Where do they live, what do they eat, do they give birth, do they hibernate & what are their predators. The diorama had to show the animal's habitat and have a few examples about the animal. The students had to turn in a paper along with their diorama. The next step in the project is for the students to build a power point presenta-tion about the animal. Pictured: Christopher Huddy, Joey Kamery, Abby Szymkowiak & Fallon Griffin.
