QUEENSLAND’S biggest in-frastructure project is hiring,with jobs and contracts avail-able now to work on the $5.4billion Cross River Rail.

The project, which has beendescribed as a heart bypassthat will unclog south-eastQueensland’s rail network, willcreate 450 apprenticeships andtraineeships, as well as workfor subcontractors, with 90 percent of firms working on theunderground river crossingand rail work being Queens-land-based, its builders say.

The Cross River Rail Deliv-ery Authority has set up atendering portal for businesseslooking to secure work, whilethere are also positions avail-able with the delivery authori-ty itself and major contractorsCPB and its partners.

More than 1800 people arecurrently working on the pro-ject across eight sites, withnumbers expected to reach3000 as it ramps up.

With construction expand-ing, expressions of interesthave now opened to fill posi-tions for trades and labour,support and rail positions fromcarpenters and form workersto riggers, storepeople, humanresources, engineers and railyard workers with major con-tractor CPB and the deliveryauthority itself.

Construction is pouring$2.8 million a day into theQueensland economy – jump-ing to $4 million a day as itramps up even furtherthrough the second halfof the year – and cur-rently employs 1800across eight sites.

The 10.2km rail-way line will runfrom Dutton Parkto Bowen Hills andinclude 5.9km oftwin tunnels underthe river and Bris-bane CBD and four newunderground stations at BoggoRoad, Woolloongabba, AlbertStreet and Roma Street, as wellas upgrades at other stations.

The project is projected totake 47,000 people off roadsand offer a turn-up-and-gotrain timetable.

Matthew Martyn-Jones,CRRDA general manager ofstrategy and people, said thatjob numbers were growing,while the apprenticeshipprogram offered a legacy ofskilled tradespeople.

“It’s only going to get big-ger,” Mr Martyn-Jones said.

“We’ve got about 1800people working on the projectnow and in a couple of yearsfrom now that will peak at over3000 people in 2022. It’s grow-ing all the time.’’
