TYPICAL TOWNS AND VILLAGESThe typical architecture of the Corrèze includes picturesque villages of oldhalf-timbered or stone houses, with slate or lauze stone roofs (as can beseen in Xaintrie), as well as numerous fountains, bridges, mills, wells andsculpted crosses. Different periods of history have left a wealth of remarkable architecturalvestiges in villages and towns such as Argentat, Aubazine,Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne, Brive-la-Gaillarde, Corrèze, Donzenac,Gimel-les-Cascades, Meymac, Meyssac, Pompadour, La Roche-Canillac,Tulle, Treignac, Ussel and Uzerche. FRANCE’S MOSTBEAUTIFUL VIL-LAGESCollonges-la-Rouge (I4) :A village built from red sandstone,hence the name, and the former seigneury of the Viscountcy ofTurenne. Sights of interest include its castles, houses with turrets andbartizans, old market hall, andslate and lauze stone roofs.

Curemonte (J5) : A medieval village with three châteaux andthree churches. Fine old houses and ramparts line the narrow streets. Note the attractive corn exchange.

Saint Robert (G1) : Situated on a hill in the Yssandonnais, Saint-Robert retains much of itsmedieval character with its narrow

streets, medieval shop-fronts and 12th century Romanesque church.

Ségur-le-Château (E1) : Local capital during the Middle Ages.Ruins of a 12C fortified castle, half-timbered houses and remains whichbear witness to the presence of a court of appeal.

Turenne (J3-J4) : The former capital of the Viscountcy. Interest is centred on its old houses, the remains of the feudal castle with its TourCésar and delightful views, and the Chapelle des Capucins.

ROMANESQUE ARCHITECTURE

Romanesque architecture spread widely in the Bas-Limousin regionfrom the 11th to the 13th centuries. The granite soil provided a strong,natural material for the construction of attractive Romanesque buildings of a high quality. The most beautiful buildings are found inAubazine (Cistercian abbey), Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne, Meymac, Tulle,Uzerche and Vigeois.

There are a number of other remarkable churches throughout the department, including Arnac-Pompadour, Brive-la-Gaillarde,Collonges-la-Rouge, Lubersac, Saillac, Saint-Angel, Saint-Bonnet-la-Rivièreand Saint-Robert…

High-quality goldworkcan be seen in thechurches of Aubazine,Auriac, Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne,Brive, Chamberet,Darnets, Donzenac,Egletons, Gimel, Lapleau,Masseret, Mercoeur,Noailles, Saint-Fréjoux,Saint-Viance, Sainte-Fortunade,Soudeilles and Tulle.

LA TOURBIÈRE DU LONGEYROUX (D8-D9)A biological area of national interest situated on the Millevachesplateau. The peat bog covers a vastdepression of 250 hectares whichgave rise to the Vézère river.

THE DORDOGNE VALLEYBetween Argentat and Beaulieu, the Dordogne valley boasts uniquearchitecture and a superb naturallandscape.

MILLEVACHES - MONÉDIÈRESParc Naturel RégionalMillevaches in the LimousinA granite plateau which extends for miles and includes vast stretchs

off forests and moorland. Further south, the harmoniously roundedcontours of the Massif des Monédières can be found.

GORGES DE LA DORDOGNEOf major ecological interest, these gorges provide visitors with a huge area in which to pursue their leisure activities. The area has a number of vantage points and sites of interest, such as Orgues de Bort,Saint-Nazaire, etc.

NOAILLES (I3)Gouffre de la FageA chasm with beautiful draperies in a variety of colours, richly decorated calcite bridges, and a multitude of stalactites, columns andfantastic shapes and palaeontological deposit. FISHINGThe Corrèze is home to 5 000 km of streams and rivers and more than4 000 hectares of reservoirs and man-made water recreation areas,making it one of the largest hydrographic networks in France.

Fish species:• High densities of cyprinids, such as carp, bream, barbel, bleak,roach, gudgeon, minnow, tench, dace and chub. The highly prevalentcarp can reach a significant size; 13 special “night carp” fishingstretches are hugely popular with fishing enthusiasts.• Carnivorous fish stocks consist of pike, perch and pikeperch. Theirarea is huge and every year record catches are recorded in the largerreservoirs.• Salmonid species, brown trout and the common grayling cohabit the main 2nd category rivers: the Dordogne, Vézère and Corrèze.The department’s extensive 1st category network contains substantialstocks of brown trout.13 Specific “graciation” fishing stretches have been created in whichyoung fish must be released alive; this initiative should enable goodfishing. Nationally rated lakes out of a total of 67 public and private lakes(including some specialist fishing lakes) are available to the generalpublic, enabling families and beginners alike to enjoy a day’s fishing.One brochure, “Fishing in the Corrèze” is available on request.

More than 40 man-made lakes, 6 of which have a surface areaof more than 100 hectares, and 6 water-sports centres inArgentat, Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne, Bort-Lanobre, Bort-les-Orgues/Sarroux, Objat and Tulle. In the Corrèze, holidaymakers arespoilt for choice with a wide range of activities available, suchas swimming, sailing, windsurfing, speedboating, water-skiing,jet skiing and rowing.
