National Coin Show Comes to HillsboroGOLD JEWELRY AND SILVER COINS BEING BOUGHT
BY BECCA SLAYBACKSTAFF WRITER
Anyone that has any gold jew-elry lying in a jewelry box, listen up! Gold is trading at over $1,600 per ounce. That’s as high as it’s ever been, and we want to buy it. What’s a coin show doing buying gold you ask? Well, these days, it seems everyone is buying gold. But how much is it really worth and how do you know if you’re getting a fair price?
Let me share with you what the other guys don’t want you to know. Pure gold is what the mar-kets are based on. Today’s market, as I write this article, is $1,642.36 per ounce. Now that’s what the big refineries pay. But those refineries don’t buy directly from the public. Rather, they buy from companies that accumulate volume by buying from the public. Then, contracts are negotiated with the refiners to sell to them in large quantities. Those companies sell to the refineries for about 90 percent of the market price. So, to make a profit, they have to make sure to pay less than 90 percent for gold. The difference
between what they pay and the market price is their gross profit. Of course, they also have to cover the cost of doing business, which would include advertising, labor, taxes, office space, insurance, utili-ties, etc.
So how much are they actu-ally paying for gold, compared to the advertised market price? Well, during an undercover project pre-formed by the National Coin Col-lectors Association, it’s a lot less than you might think. We visited a number of jewelry stores, coin shops and traveling buying events to see what we would be offered for our gold. We were surprised to see the wide spectrum of prices we were offered. The gold jewelry we took to these businesses was actually worth just over $300. The most we were offered was $180 (60 percent of the market price) and the least was a measly $42 (14 per-cent of the market price). $42 for $300 worth of gold seemed like a rip off to us. After that eye opening test, we decided to start offering a service where we buy gold from the public. The response has been overwhelmingly positive. We pay a
fair price for the gold, which still allows us to make a profit. The cus-tomer can go away happy, knowing they received a fair price.
So if you have gold jewelry just lying around, please bring it in to us. We will examine it, weigh it and quote a fair price based on that day’s market price. We have nego-tiated a contract with the number one refinery in the United States. This enables us to pay you more. Our service is fun and it’s free. What we offer you is what you get, with no hidden charges like some other companies. If you choose to
sell your gold to us, we will pay you on the spot. If you choose not to sell, then that’s fine too. There is never any pressure to sell to us, ever!
We have been hosting these shows since 1995, and come to town about once a year. Although we are looking for scrap precious metals, coins are our forte. That’s what we are known for and what we love. Whether you have a sin-gle coin or an entire collection, we would love to see it. We also buy paper currency and gold and silver bullion.

By now just about everyone hasheard of the phenomenal “Knock-Out” Rose. We’ve tried them all in ourown gardens and in landscapes, and toour delight they are terrific, as goodas all the hype.“Knock-Out” roses are easy to
grow, bloom constantly, resist disease, survive winter cold and “self-clean”.This means the spent blooms drop offand are replaced with new blooms, without tedious “deadheading” (cut-ting the old blooms off). They allgrow to about four feet tall and widein a nice bushy shape without muchpruning. They are so colorful and per-form so well they can be used insteadof shrubs in foundation plantings andhedges, with little maintenance exceptonce-a-year pruning.“Knock-Out” roses are “own-root”
roses. This means that they are notgrafted onto a rootstock from a differ-ent rose, but are the same plant fromtop to bottom. They won’t sprout non-matching suckers from the base of theplant like grafted roses, and the entireplant is hardy to zone 5.Winter hardiness is what’s so ter-
rific about tree form “Knock-Out”roses. In the past, getting rose treesthrough the winter was a gamble.Elaborate precautions were needed toprotect rose trees from freezing. Notso with “Knock-Out” rose trees, which are simply “Knock-Out” rosebushes grown on a trunk about threefeet tall. This puts the bushy part up ateye level, and allows flowers to beplanted underneath for a strikingeffect. We call it “eye-level red”.Nothing is showier in the landscape,or more stunning in a large planterpot.Tree roses thrive in locations with
full sun all day or even in partial sun.We take special care when planting, adding peat moss and Rose Tone fer-tilizer mixed thoroughly with theplanting soil. Staking for the first year
keeps the plant straight. After that wejust fertilize and mulch them like anyother plant. Once-a-year pruning toget rid of dead wood helps keep themshapely. You should remove any deadbranches and cut the rest back toabout a foot long, in late winter orearly spring each year. If you justcan’t stand insects chewing holes inthe leaves you can spray them with anall-purpose rose spray like Bonide“Rose RX 3 in 1” but they reallydon’t need it.No rose is totally maintenance-
free, but Knock-Out roses haveproven to be tough survivors with
very little attention. If you’d like totry some, or want to add more to yourgarden, or make a gift of one to yourfavorite “black thumb,” see us. Wehave healthy, good-sized Knock-Outrose trees on sale right now. If you’vegiven up on rose trees, think againbecause you can grow these easily.

babysits her grandchildren. She said sheand John have three children, 12 grand-children and one great-grandchild.John is a lifelong Highland County

DEAR ABBY: I am a30-year-old woman in along-distance relationshipwith an amazing man formore than a year. We visiteach other every fewmonths and chat onlineevery night. We're in loveand feel we are ready tomove on to the next step --living together. We live in different
countries. He is much moreestablished in his countryand very close to his family.I am in a temporary job, andwhile I care for my familyvery much, there really isn'tanything to tie me here. Itmakes more sense for me tomove there. (It's a five-hourplane ride from here.)My family, especially my
parents, are making me feelextremely guilty about evenconsidering this move. Theysay I am "abandoning"them, and ask how could Ilive with myself if some-thing ever happened?Abby, my parents are in
their early 50s and in excel-lent health. My two sisterslive near them. I fail to seewhy I am getting so muchgrief, when I just want tomove on to the next stage ofmy life. Any advice?
-- PULLED IN TWODIRECTIONS
DEAR PULLED INTWO: Your parents areanxious because even at 30,you are still their child, andthey are experiencing sepa-ration anxiety. However, atyour age, you should bemature enough to decideyour future.I do have a word of
advice I hope you'll consid-er: Before you commit toleaving the United States tojoin your boyfriend, pleasedo some research on therights of women in hiscountry. Here in the U.S. weenjoy many privileges thatare not shared by womenoutside our borders. Theyconcern marriage, divorce, division of property andchild custody. It is impor-tant that if you choose tomarry him, you do it withyour eyes wide open. Thatway there will be no sur-prises.
DEAR ABBY: My adultson, "Jake," is in prison forthe fourth time for an indis-cretion in his early 20s. Hehasn't repeated the offense,
but he doesn't comply withthe rules of his probationand ends up back in prison.I fully supported my sonwhen the incident happenedbecause I felt he got a badbreak, but I feel he shouldtake responsibility for hisactions.Jake's repeated offenses
for noncompliance are partof a rebellious and stubbornattitude and an unwilling-ness to accept the lifelongconsequences of his initialoffense. To compound theissue, he has three daugh-ters. He keeps popping inand out of their lives, whichis very disruptive. If itweren't for them, I'd proba-bly write him off (I havedone that emotionally any-way), but I keep trying tomaintain some kind of con-nection between them incase he comes around some-day.Is this foolish thinking
on my part? By the way, myson never married the girls'mother and has never paidchild support, but she hasstill been willing to let himbe part of their lives.-- WRITING HIM OFF IN
ILLINOIS
DEAR WRITING HIMOFF: If you're asking mefor permission to take your-self out of the equation, youhave it. It is not your job tomaintain Jake's relationshipwith his daughters -- that'sHIS responsibility. If themother of the girls is will-ing to tolerate his irrespon-sibility, that is her choice. But if you have had enough, then it's time to take a stepbackward.

Summer’s here! Timefor cookouts and va-cations! Have you
ever taken a road trip va-cation? Your familymight go camping, tovisit Grandma, or even toan amusement park, buthave you ever taken aWeird Ohio road trip? What’s that? I’m gladyou asked!
Ohio is filled with oddmuseums, weird places, and even some spookysites. You’ve probablybeen to a museum, buthave you been to any ofthe strange, mysteriousplaces listed below?
Ever see a field of giantcorn – concrete corn?Head over to the tinytown of Dublin to see thisunique sculpture of 109cement corncobs, almostsix feet tall and arrangedin rows as if they’regrowing in a field.
“Fields of Corn” openedin 1994 at the Sam andEulalia Frantz Park. Thecobs were individuallycreated so the size, shapeand kernel patterns are alldifferent. If you ar-en’t interested in vegeta-bles, what about a Wall ofGum? The Maid Rite (getit – made right?) Sand-
wich Shop in Greenvilleis a small brick buildingthat serves tasty food. The whole ENTIRE out-side walls of the building
are covered with chewedup wads of gum. Thereare so many gum wadsthat it’s hard for people tofind new places to sticktheir gum.
Not chewing on that -how about rocks? Try avisit to Hartman’s His-torical Rock Garden inSpringfield. During the
great Depression, a mannamed H. G. Hartmanbuilt a 35” by 140” rockgarden with over 250,000individual stones. He be-gan with a fishpond andwent on to create minia-ture stone castles withmoats and drawbridges, plus historical buildings. You can visit the WhiteHouse, Noah’s Ark, Lin-coln’s birthplace andMount Vernon – all with-
out leaving Ohio. Cool,huh?
If rocks aren’t youridea of fun, what about amonster? Head on up to
Lake Erie and see if youcan spot Bessie, the LakeErie Monster. You’veheard of Nessie, the LochNess Monster, but whygo to Scotland when Ohiohas our own creature.Since 1898, people havereported seeing an un-known beast that’s de-scribed as gray, snakelikeand thirty to forty feetlong in the waters of LakeErie. Through the years
many people have re-ported seeing Bessie riseup out of the lake show-ing a row of ‘fierce teeth.’A Huron marine ownerhas offered a $100,000reward for the safe andunharmed capture of thebeast. It’s still un-claimed.
Not into beast taming? How about meeting aghost? Deep in the back-woods of Vinton Countyis an abandoned train tun-nel – the Moonville Tun-nel. Moonville, a town of
miners and their familiesvanished long ago; someare buried in the ancientMoonville Cemetery. What’s interesting aboutthe tunnel is the ghost.Stories vary about whothe ghost is, but some leg-ends mention a railroadbrakeman who died in atrain accident. The storygoes – if you visit the tun-nel at night you can seehim swinging his lanternto warn others away fromthe scene of the accident.Or you might just see thelantern swung by an in-visible hand.
This summer why nottravel the weird road andvisit some unusualplaces? Write us atwww.write2cookies@
gmail.com. and let usknow what you discover!
If you are a butterfly lover, Ohio is theplace for you. I bet you didn’t know
that Ohio has more than 140 differentkinds of butterflies flying around. Notall species will come traveling into your backyard, but if youwould like to attract as many aspossible, youcan plantbutterflyfriendlyflowers andbushes that willhave them com-ing to you in no time.Butterflies areequipped with a verysensitive sense of smell. They can identify their favor-ite plants from miles away and willtravel hours to get to that delectablefeast. If they like what they smell, theywill lay their eggs and make your yard
their home. When you begin to plan your butterfly
garden, make sure to pick nectar sourcesthat will have a nectar supply from earlyspring through late fall. Some of the best
plants for Ohio butterflies in-clude: Lilac, Phlox, Butterfly
milkweed,Ironweed,New Eng-land aster,
Mexicansunflower,
Purple cone-flower, Zinnia, Cos-
mos, Butterfly bush,Goldenrod, Anise hys-
sop, Wooly applemint,and Gooseneck loosestrife.
Caterpillars are butterflies too! Many caterpillars are fussy eaters
and rely on only one or two foodsources. Others will feed on a variety of
plants. Milkweeds, parsley, dill, carrotplants, violets, plantain, black locus, dogwood, and viburnum are all tastyfoods to many caterpillars.
Remember pesticides kill butterfliesand caterpillars so don’t use them in oraround your garden. For more informa-tion on butterflies, check out thesebooks at your local library: The Butter-fly Book by Donald and Lillian Stokes;Butterflies and Skippers of Ohio byDavid C. Iftner, John A. Shuey, andJohn V. Calhoun; and The ButterflyGarden by Jerry Sedenko.

A collage is a picture that you make from many differentkinds of materials—like pictures cut from magazines, paper clips, pipe cleaners, colored paper. . . .Thepossibilities are endless, and the results are awesome!
You will need:
Cardboard, glue, scissors, and collage materials, such as. . . pictures cut frommagazines, popsicle sticks, buttons, tissue paper, construction paper, tooth-picks, macaroni, foil, yarn, etc.
Directions:
Decide what picture you want to make—an ocean scene or a swingset or a city skyline or a farm. You may want to start by gluing a sheet of colored paper to the card-board. The cardboard will keep the picture stiff.
Cut out pieces of paper or fabric to represent different parts of the pic-ture and glue them to the background. Glue some of the objects downto complete the picture. For example, you might want to use a big yel-low button for the sun or a piece of macaroni to represent a bird. Youmight make a wooden boat out of popsicle sticks. When everything is glued down, let the glue dry completely. Don’t for-get to sign your masterpiece. You may want to make several picturesso that you can give some of them as gifts. After all, Father’s Day isjust around the corner.

COSMETIC BENEFIT OF DENTAL IMPLANTSAside from restoring biting andchewing capability to the mouth, dental implants also serve a cos-metic function. The most obviousbenefit to an implant patient’s ap-pearance is that the replacementtooth fills in the gap left by the losttooth with a natural-looking sub-stitute. On a deeper level, dentalimplants help patients avert boneloss. Without implants, missingteeth and associated bone losscause the lower third of the face tocollapse and shrink inward. As theanchoring portion of a dental im-plant forms a strong bondwith thejaw, it stimulates the surroundingbone and preserves it. As a result, the bone loss that would other-wise be inevitable with missingteeth is avoided.
Our entire staff at CLARKFAMILY DENTISTRY encour-ages your questions aboutcomprehensive dental care. Wesupply superior oral health carefor the entire family. Foranswers to your oral healthissue questions we invite you tocall our office at 937.393.3494.
Your health is our firstpriority. We are pleased toprovide you with state-of-the-artdental care at 624 S. HighStreet, Hillsboro.
Our goal is to make each visitto our office a comfortable andpositive experience. Newpatients are always welcome.
P.S. One of the factors that isused to assess a patient’ssuitability for a dental implant isthe amount and density ofunderlying bone in the jaw.

CELEBRITIES BORN ON THIS DAY: Bar Refaeli, 27; Russell Brand, 37; Angelina Jolie, 37; Noah Wyle, 41.HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Keep close tabs on what everyone around you is doing. Don't let assumptions lead you in the wrong direction. Ask questions and focus on your relationships to avoid mishaps and encour-age greater opportunity and advancement. Love is in the stars, and doing a little extra to keep the peace will pay off. Your numbers are 3, 8, 13, 23, 28, 35, 47.ARIES (March 21-April 19): Make changes now. Develop your ideas and plans, and discuss your intentions with someone who will contribute. Don't get flustered or try to cut corners. Accidents will set you back. Take your time and do things right. Love is highlighted. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Take care of any financial or per-sonal paperwork. Procrastinating will lead to anxiety and stress. Being proactive and well-pre-pared will impress, leading to fortunate opportunities. Take care of ailments or injuries quickly. Collect on old debts. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Relationships count, so don't terminate a partnership that can offer you something in the future. Financial gains can be made, as long as you stick to a set budget. Emotions will esca-late. You cannot buy love, but you can win it with affection. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Deal with institutions, govern-ment agencies or any matters that can affect you financially or medically. Stifle anyone trying to take advantage of you in order to avoid a stressful situation. Assess, do what's necessary and move on quickly. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Caring, sharing and helping oth-ers will lead to high returns. Taking on responsibilities will show your capabilities and should be embraced. Love and romance will play out in your favor. Generosity and kindness will bring great success. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Radical changes may be tempt-ing, but the consequences would be too great to consider mov-ing forward. There will be too many obstacles to overcome. Opportunities will come from picking up the pieces after some-one else fails to excel. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): You'll capture the attention of the people most likely to sup-port your efforts. Your contribu-tion will bring about prospects that can help you establish your presence in an area you want to dominate. Partnerships will improve. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Use your intuition regarding financial or domestic decisions. Consider signing an agreement, but don't give in to demands that don't promise results. Take greater interest in your commu-nity or past relationships. Don't spend foolishly. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Embrace change as well as challenges. Use established connections to get the results you want. Love and romance are in the stars, and favorable alterations to your current living arrangements will lead to greater happiness. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Look at all aspects of any contract or deal you are trying to get launched. Don't look for ordinary solutions when a more
obscure approach is required. Forget past squabbles and reunite with someone from your past who can help you now. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Socialize, network, share ideas and formulate agreements. Suggestions will be worth con-sidering, and mixing business with pleasure will bring a friend-ly atmosphere to whatever you are trying to accomplish, ensur-ing success.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Someone will want to ruin your plans. Don't allow criti-cism to slow your progress. Rethink your strategy and incorporate suggestions. Don't misinterpret someone's interest. Ulterior motives are likely. Resolve injuries or ailments quickly. BIRTHDAY BABY: You are fun, bright, adventuresome and quick to make a choice.
