used to hold the

tripping time).

This is the topmost joint in the drill

string and is 40-45 feet in length. Itis commonly square or hexagonal.The kelly passes through therotary table and transmits thetable rotation to the drill string viathe kelly bushing.

bushing and it rotates thestring as well1. drilling to be carried outstand by stand instead.2.Top drive is not removedduring trips.

Drilling String Components

This term includes all the components usedto drill below the kelly or top drive; and it caninclude the following components:-1- Drill Pipe & Tool Joints .

2- Heavy weight drill pipe (HWDP.

4- Rotary Bits

3. Stabilizers: of a blade typeconstruction. Drilling fluid can passfreely between the blades while the

outer edge of the blades contacts thewall of the hole and holds the drillcollars firmly centered in the hole.They do exactly as their nameimplies, they provide stability to the bitand collars.

Reamers: These usually have the samediameter as the bit and are run a little distanceabove it

Under-reamers: Used opening out a hole below

a restriction such as imposed by the blow-outpreventer assembly.

Hole Openers: Used for drilling large diameter holes. They have replaceable cutters and serve

the same function as an underreamer exceptthey are not collapsible and can only be usedwhen there is no restriction smaller than the holesize they drill.

Rotary Bits1. Drag Bits:- no movingparts but drill by the

shovelling action of their blade on the formation.2. Roller Bits:- haverotating cones.Three cone bits (Tri-Cone)are the most widely used inthe oil field.

3. Diamond Bits:- Theseare designed to drill by thescraping action of

diamonds set in a steelmatrix. This type of bits isnormally used in hardformations where long bitlife and the subsequent

reduction in trip time are

desirable.

Mud Pumps

1.Double-acting Pumps (Duplex): - Thismeans that both sides of the piston are used for pumping.

2.Single-acting Pumps (Triplex): - These onlyone side of the piston is used for pumping, thatis, the cylinder is then filling or discharging

4- Degaser .5- Mud cleaner .6- Centrifuge.

Solid Control Equipment

Blow Out Preventor (BOP)

a means of closing-off the annular space between the

drill pipe and casing 1- Annular Preventors. 2- Ram Preventors.
