• Difficult sentences

$

1. What is the function of “did” in this sentence?

“Did” here is used for emphasis. It means “ ”确实

We did have a Wiffle-ball set, but you would have been hard-pressed to find it in our playroom.

This sentence is a concessive clause ( 让步状语从句 ) with an emphatic “did”. e.g.:Contemporary women do enjoy lots of rights, but complete gender equality is still a dream to be realized.

$

1. Paraphrase the sentence.

We weren’t boyish girls.

Tomboys we weren’t.

2. Analyze the sentence pattern.

这个句子是个倒装句,起到的是强调“tomboys”这个宾语的作用。倒装句有很多用法。 Little did he say at the meeting. Out rushed the girl. Only then did he realize his mistake.

$I couldn’t have distinguished a transmission from an alternator. ..Because honestly, the mechanic could have shown me an electric can opener and said, “This is part of your car and it’s broken — pay me to fix it,” and I wouldn’t have known any better.

What is the function of the pattern “ could/would have done” here?

This pattern is the use of subjunctive mood.

$Game---Q & A

• 每组选取一个问题( 10’ ) , 由一位代表负责读题(纸条),其他组员回答

• 若该组不能回答或答错,则改问题变为抢答( 5’ ),分数由答对的小组获得

$Choose a lucky number

• 1. Where can we find this sentence in the text : “The car I drove needed some work but I was afraid to take it to the mechanic.”

• There are two questions:• ① What does “work” here refer to?• It refers to necessary repair or maintenance the car

needed.• ② Why was the author afraid to do so?• Because she didn’t know anything about engineering,

not to mention how to fix a car.

$

• 2. Where can we find this sentence in the text : “I can’t help shuddering when I hear about studies that show that women are at a disadvantage when it comes to math.”

• There are two questions:• ① what does “shudder” mean? Try to explain the meaning in

English• Shake uncontrollably; tremble with fear or disgust• ② Why did the author shudder?• Because the studies clearly indicate that a normal woman

can’t beat a man in the aspect of math, only abnormal ones could do well in math, but the author is really good at math.

$

• 3. Is the learning process easy for the author?• In your opinion, what kinds of things could the

author gain from this process? (at least list five things)

• Open-ended. • Tips : the knowledge of engineering • a sense of accomplishments• a strong sense of self-confidence • a strong mind• an ability of independent thinking

$

• 4. Where can we find this sentence in the text : “I had moments of panic while sitting underneath the buzzing fluorescent lights in the engineering library on Saturday afternoons, when I worried that the estrogen in my body was preventing me from understanding thermodynamics.”

• There is one question:• How do you understand “the estrogen in my body was

preventing me from understanding thermodynamics”?• This part means being a woman may prevent the author from

understanding a subject which is usually regarded as a male subject.

$

• 5. Where can we find this sentence in the text : “No man is an island. No woman is, either.”

• There are two questions:• ① how do you understand this sentence?• No man is an island was said by an English poet named John

Donne, which means no one can live an isolated life without being affected by others.

• ② what does the author try to emphasize ?• In this sentence, by changing the famous quotation, the

author consciously ignores the fact that “man” refers to all the human beings, the author focuses on “woman”.

$

• 6. Where can we find this sentence in the text : “So I reminded myself that those studies, the ones that say that math comes more naturally to men, are based on a faulty premise: that you can judge a person’s abilities separate from the cultural cues that she has received since she was an infant.”

• There are two questions:• ① What do the studies indicate?• They indicate that a woman’s ability is dependent on her nature, not on

her nurture or her efforts.• ② What does “cultural cues” refer to?• Cultural cues refer to indirect suggestions as to how to behave

appropriately picked up through observing others, in short, exterior atmosphere or nurture.

$

• 7. Where can we find this sentence in the text : “A woman can learn anything a man can, but first she needs to know that she can do it, and that takes a leap of faith. It also helps to have selective hearing.”

• There are two questions:• ① What does “takes a leap of faith” mean?• It refers to “taking the risk of being wrong”.• ② What does “selective hearing” mean?• It means that when people give your advice, you should

decide by yourself on which one you would follow or ignore.

$

• 8. The author suggests in part one that she stumbled into engineering. Try to find evidence in the text. You can turn to p165 for help.

• … , she was not a tomboy.• …, but not to an engineering department.• …, she didn’t know the first thing about engineering.• …, but because she craved independence from her

parents.• … already earned her six credits in engineering.

$

• 9. The author seems to suggest that she didn’t become an engineer entirely by accident. Try to find evidence in the text. You can turn to p165 for help.

• … at math and design.• … she participated in a national competition to

convert an SUV into a hybrid electric vehicle.• … work harder at it.• … that she should study more.• … had to work hard at coursed she found difficult,

which encouraged her to keep going.
