VACCINATION AMONG HISPANIC ADOLESCENTS

THE PROJECT Study Type: clinic randomized trial Goal: Increase HPV vaccination in Hispanic adolescent girls aged

11-17 in Houston Method: Using two different interventions (see subsequent slides)

to focus on parental knowledge, attitudes, self-efficacy, and other psychosocial factors involved in the decision-making process. The interventions will be delivered by promotoras (lay health workers). We hope that this will encourage them to vaccinate their

daughters. Location: The waiting rooms in 27 different clinics around

Houston that offer the HPV vaccine and whose patient population is primarily Hispanic

INTERVENTION 1: TIMI Tailored Interactive Media Intervention Personalized iPad program that uses participant

responses to tailor subsequent information given

INTERVENTION 2: FOTONOVELA

A storybook that follows a mother through the process of whether or not to vaccinate her daughter against HPV

THE TASKS Protocol Development and Measurement

Edited both content and Spanish translations of the forms and the main questionnaire.

Promotora Training Developed/Edited training materials for promotoras, including

the manual, powerpoint presentation, and training objectives. Usability Testing of TIMI Program

Designed, carried out, and analyzed a usability test personalized iPad program for the purpose of training promotoras to deal with problem areas.

THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS Became well versed in all aspects of the design of

an intervention study. Gained experience in quantitative analysis using

SPSS. Contributed significantly to the editing of training

and project materials. Saw a usability test from start to finish.

THE INNOVATION Reversal: Defending both sides of an argument

in order to avoid bias. Frame-shift: Post-it notes to remind data

collectors and promotoras of important notes.

THE IMPACT Better understanding of public health. The power of language. Problem-solving skills. Complexity of a research project.
