About this Video• VB.NET orientation video
– Should have watched the general orientation video for the Distributed Education courses.
– Give you more specific information about this class.
– Information necessary to go through the class.– Helpful hints.

Purpose of This Class• Fundamental programming
constructs, e.g. variables, loops, arrays, etc.
• Good understanding of VB.NET programming.
• Programming design.

What You Need• Don’t need any programming
background or prior knowledge.• Do need to know how to use
computers, e.g. open a folder, create a folder, run a software, etc.

What is VB.NET• VB.NET is part of Visual Studio .NET
family.• What is .NET?
– Microsoft’s latest environment for creating software programs.
– Allows programming in different languages within one environment.
– Allows creating web programs using Visual Basic language.

Install Software• Need a software package called
“Microsoft Visual Studio 2008” to create VB.NET programs.
• Install on your home computer– Download Visual Studio Professional 2008
edition from http://iuware.iu.edu– Free of charge to IUPUI students– Large package, about 3.5 GB. – Compatible with Windows Vista, Windows XP
service pack 2

Install Software• Install on your home computer
– Also need to install MSDN library– Carefully read the instructions from the iuware
site and the installation process– Allow plenty of time to download and install the
package
• Use the software in the labs– Optional lab for the class– Visual Studio is installed in lots of the labs on
campus– Take advantage of the open lab!!!

How to Follow the Class• Download all the available materials
from the course web site. • Have the sample project and the
video open at the same time. • Good strategy:
– Take notes on the project file itself– Make hard copies of the files.
• If there are quizzes relevant to each topic, take the quizzes one by one along the semester.

Projects• Mostly short ones• Take the same concept in the sample
project and solve a different problem.• Develop a plan first.• If there is a final project, start early.
