We’re reaching for the sunRETURN TO THE SUN

WHO: Stephen McCafferty (vocals/guitar),Alan Barbour (guitar/vocals), Sean Ford(bass/vocals), Nic Ross (drums/vocals).WHERE: Edinburgh.FOR FANS OF: Manic Street Preachers,Stereophonics, Catfish And The Bottlemen.JIM SAYS: Having gone to Perth Collegemyself, it does fill me with pride the num-ber of great bands and musicians I comeacross who studied there.

Though I actually did media, we werebased in the same annexe as the musi-cians. It’s widely regarded as offering oneof the best music education programmesin the country.

It was at Perth College that Steve andAlan from Return To The Sun first crossedpaths when studying music there in 2006.

They originally formed a band called Beau-tiful By Design. Steve told me: “When theband split, we went off and did our ownthing before deciding to start anotherband. After a few stop-starts it just kind ofhappened. We met Sean and Nic throughads on Gumtree.”

Though based in Edinburgh, only Nicoriginally hails from the capital. Alan’s fromKinross, Steve’s a Fifer and Sean is aDevon lad. Steve said: “We hit it off straightaway and recorded and released ourdebut six-track EP (Eskimo Bones) withinsix months. That took us on our first tour

around the UK. During the London part ofthat tour we met the guys at The AnimalFarm who offered us a three-single deal.”

The material I’ve heard so far demon-strates that they’ve certainly go what ittakes to get to the next level. The first twosingles 501 and Freakshow are set to befollowed by a third, Haze, in May.

Return To The Sun play The Green Roomin Perth (April 23), then Edinburgh ElectricCircus (April 28) and Buskers in Dundee(April 29). They kick off their UK tour topromote the Haze single at Broadcast inGlasgow on May 8.More:www.facebook.com/returntothesunl Jim presents Drivetime on XFM Scot-land, Monday to Friday 4-7pm.www.xfm.co.ukwww.jimgellatly.com

THE future is bright, thefuture is GREY.

That’s the word coming outof Manchester and it’s newmusic movement.

And they’re standing on theshoulders of the likes of the StoneRoses, Joy Division and Oasis.

Leading from the front is maver-ick Bipolar Sunshine — real nameAdio Marchant.

He says: “There’s a new move-ment, we’re calling the style andattitude Grey. It’s basically lookingat music and art from a grey per-spective.

“We’re used to the rain andclouds here, so that’s where thename comes from. We pay homageto all the top people who’ve comebefore us from Manchester.

“But social media has enabledthings like Soundcloud to becomethe new hub for your people.

“You don’t need to be in the

same city so much anymore. It’snow more about the same vibe.Grey is the movement.”

Adio first made his name as partof hit band Kid British.

But he’s loving the solo life.Adio says: “I have a lot more

freedom to go into the angles Iwant to musically, sonically andtechnically.

“I’m working with my producerand he’s cementing my sound. So Idon’t feel like I’m on my own as Iwork so closely with him. It’snever lonely.”

‘I like FKA Twigs’After a series of EPs, his debut

album will be released later thisyear.

Adio says: “I feel this year istime. I’m already writing stuff foralbum two.

“There’s a side of me I want toshow on this album and anotherside on the next one. In this day

and age, it’s about giving peoplewhat they want — and what theywant is music.

“I want to give people an albumor a mixtape every year.

“It’s a good time to be makingmusic. The middleman is gettingcut out each day more and more.

“The artist is going straight tothe consumer. And there are somegreat new artists — I like whatFKA Twigs is trying to do.

“I’ve always taken risks.”Adio has a big fanbase building
