replicate some pre-historic pottery styles that had been discovered in an archaeological excavation of an ancient pueblo site near San Ildefonso

Maria and Julian invented a technique that would allow for areas of the pottery to have a matte finish and other areas to be a glossy jet black

Value: An Element of art which refers to the lightness or darkness of a color or tone in a work of art.

Texture refers to the surface quality or “feel” of a work of art. Textures can be actual or simulated. Actual textures would be something that you could physically feel with your fingers, while simulated textures are suggested by the way the artist has created certain areas of an image.

An Element of art color has three properties:

1. Hue, the name of the color, like red, yellow, or blue, etc.

2. Intensity, the purity and strength of a color, such as bright red or dark red.

3. Value, the lightness or darkness of a color.

Color can be broken up into three sets; primary, secondary, and intermediate colors.

Space is the area provided for a particular purpose. Greek Pottery will have three dimensions (length, width, and height). Space includes the background, foreground and middle ground. Space refers to the distances or areas around, between or within components of a piece. There are two types of space: positive and negative space. Positive space refers to the space of a shape representing the subject matter. Negative space refers to the space around and between the subject matter.
