The Mass in Slowest Motion: The Eucharistic Prayer
Everything Jesus Christ said during His earthly life
was true. But at times He emphasized certain teachings with
special solemnity: Amen, Amen I say to you… So also every
moment of the Mass is important, indeed sacred. But the
Eucharistic Prayer is singled out with special emphasis
because it is the summit of the Mass – the point to which we
aspire and from which blessings flow. If we think of the
Mass as a temple, the Eucharistic Prayer is the holy holies.
Hence the intense preparation for entering into it. Without
departing from us the priest enters into the presence of
almighty God, to bring Him sacrifice on our behalf.
Officially, there are many versions of the
Eucharistic Prayer. Practically, only three are used.
Subsequent columns will examine the Eucharistic Prayer I in
detail. But first let’s consider what all of the prayers have in
common: the epiclesis, the consecration, and the anamnesis.
First, the epiclesis is the calling down of the Holy
Spirit upon the bread and wine to be sanctified and
transubstantiated into the Body and Blood of Christ. The
priest’s actions at this moment correspond to his words. He
places his hands over the bread and wine to signify the
descent of the Holy Spirit. We emphasize and call attention
to this moment by the ringing of the sanctuary bells.
Second, the Consecration or Institution Narrative. This
is the most sacred moment in the Eucharistic Prayer and
therefore in the entire Mass. At this moment the priest
speaks in the voice of Christ Himself: This is my Body…this is
the Chalice of my Blood. At the speaking of these words the
substance of the bread and wine ceases to exist; there is only
the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Christ under the
form of bread and wine. Thus the rubrics instruct the priest
to speak “clearly and distinctly, as the nature of these words
requires.”
Immediately after each consecration, the priest
elevates first the Host and then the Chalice. He does this
precisely so that the faithful can look upon the bread that is
now the Body of Christ and the chalice that now holds His
Precious Blood. The altar boy rings the sanctuary bells to
alert the faithful to Christ’s presence and call them to
adoration. Many people make the mistake of bowing their
heads and looking down at this moment. Although done out
of reverence, this is still mistaken. Rather, you should look
up at the Host and say (quietly) My Lord and my God! And
then at the chalice, saying Dear Jesus, mercy!
Third, anamnesis is a remembering or memorial.
Keep in mind that “memorial” in this case does not mean a
mere recollection of events. It is the making present of the
events under the signs of bread and wine so that we can
conform our lives to them (cf. CCC 1363). At some point
after the consecration the priest speaks to the Father
about how we are now invested in the saving events made
present on the altar: namely, our Lord’s passion, death,
resurrection, and ascension.

Public Mass at Saint James
Saint James will begin offering public
Masses on Sunday, May 31, in observance
with the Feast of Pentecost. Father Scalia has
issued final guidelines that are posted on our
website, and transmitted via his Constant
Contact emails. As a reminder, if you are
not signed up for Constant Contact, please
send a note to
rectory@stjamescatholic.org. To prepare for
the resumption of public Masses please read
the following guidance:

1. We will be using Heller Hall and Knecht
Gymnasium for the Masses on a rotating
schedule on Sundays. These sites will
allow us to follow the social distancing
requirements established by the state of
Virginia.

2. Admission to Mass will be based on the
same system we have used for our
 recently held public Communion
services. You will sign up for Mass
via a link that will be on
www.stjamescatholic.org. We will
notify selected attendees as to the time
 and location of their Mass.

3. All attendees will be required to wear
masks at Mass, and follow all social
distancing, and other procedures, as
directed by our volunteers and Priests.

4. As always, if you are selected but are ill,
or feel that it is too risky for you
to attend Mass, please stay home and be
 safe. Bishop Burbidge’s dispensation is
still in effect, so attendance at these
Masses is voluntary and not required.

Masks for St. James Parishioners
Saint James Catholic School’s American Herit-
age Girls Troop 0681 has worked very hard on
creating cloth masks for parishioners who need
one. The troop will be leaving the masks in the
front vestibule of the Church, in a basket marked
for them. If you need a mask, please take one.
We thank the American Heritage Girls,
especially Ms. Lucia Hunter, for organizing this
vital project.

St. Lucy Project Food Drive
“
For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was
thirsty and you gave me something to drink…”
Matthew 25:35
On Friday, May 22, Saint James hosted a food drive for the Diocese of Arlington’s Saint Lucy’s Food
Project. Despite the rainy day, the generosity of our parishioners shined brightly with “over 6,000 pounds,
three tons, of food dropped off for the drive,” according to Kate Altmeyer, one of the drive’s organizers.
Below are some pictures from the drive.
