• Six fragments found in Cave 4 from 1953-1959

• Now held in the Rockerfeller Museum

• First entrusted to John Strugnell (1930-2007)

• He said that Judaism was a "horrible religion" which "should not exist,". He also said that Judaism was "a Christian heresy, and we deal with our heretics in different ways. You are a phenomenon that we haven't managed to convert -- and we should have managed."

(non) publication for 15 more years

• In 1979 Elisha Qimron is brought as a co-editor.

• Qimron announced the existence of MMT scroll in 1984.

(illegal) publication

• Hershel Shanks publishes an underground copy in 1992

• Qimron sued and won 150,000NIS

• Qimron officially published MMT in 1994

• 4 seasons of 91 days each

• Each season has 3 months of 30 days + 1 extra day

• Month 1 Day 1 is always Wednesday

• Shavu`ot is always on Sunday

• Also split into 7 periods of 50 days with agricultural holiday at the end of each

The Elders of Israel used to precede them on foot to the Mount of Olives, where there was a place of immersion. [The Elders of Israel] used to defile the priest who was to burn the red heifer because of the Sadducees, so that they would not say: “[the burning] was done by one upon whom the sun had set.”

Most scholars think the people who lived at Qumran were Essenes and they wrote the scrolls in the caves.

Lawrence Schiffman thinks the people who lived at Qumran did write the scrolls but they started off as a group of Sadducess.

Thinks scrolls were in caves were written in Jerusalem and brought to caves shortly before 68CE

טהרות אלו על גבי אלו:Beth Shammai permit the cowives to the [surviving] brothers but

Beth Hillel prohibit. If they perform halisa, Beth Shammai disqualify [the children of the cowives] from [marrying into] the priesthood but Beth Hillel qualify them. If they perform yibbum, Beth Shammai qualify them but Beth Hillel disqualify them.

Even though these prohibit and these permit, Beth Shammai did not refrain from marrying women from Beth Hillel, nor did Beth Hillel [refrain from marrying women] from Beth Shammai. They [also] did not refrain from using any pure and impure items that these declared pure and these declared impure one on top of the other to prepare pure [foods].
