Sandra, age 32, Madison, Wisconsin

Hobbies: Reading, gardening, watching TV, exercise

Style: Informal, traditional but cozy interiors

Collectibles: plants and quilts

Color Preference: Earthy Colors

The space will suit the client’s desire aesthetically in that it will have a Nomad feel to

the space. Of the six personas Nomad’s enjoy earth tones predominately but the space

will be contrasted with pops of organic colors or sheens as accents. This is to provide

ample visual interest. Nothing will be symmetrical, to evoke a relaxed atmosphere to

enjoy the hobbies of watching television and reading. Balance will be achieved in visual

weight. The collection of the client’s plants will aid in balance. The focal point of the

rooms will be the north wall elevation as this offers the breathtaking views of the rolling

forested Wisconsin hills. Highlighting the architectural focal point of windows also allows

the view of the client’s garden to be seen. The furniture will have soft curvilinear lines.

Traditional geometric patterns will be mixed with classic prints. Functionally, there will be

armoires with glass doors to highlight the collection of quilts. Lastly, there will be an area

for working out.

My client is Sandra, age 32, from Madison, Wisconsin. Her hobbies include reading, watching

television, exercise and gardening. The problem that I have been asked to resolve is to provide an

overall aesthetic of a traditional atmosphere utilizing earth tones. The functional objective would be

an exercise area, storage for her quilt collection and available space her plant collection. The space

will suit the client’s request in that it will have a Nomad feel to the space. Of the six personas Nomad’s

enjoy earth tones predominately but the space will be contrasted with pops of organic colors or

sheens as accents. This is to provide ample visual interest. Nothing will be symmetrical, to evoke a

relaxed atmosphere to enjoy the hobbies of watching television and reading. Balance will be

achieved in visual weight. The collection of the client’s plants will aid in balance. The focal point of the

rooms will be the north wall elevation as this offers the breathtaking views of the rolling forested

Wisconsin hills. Highlighting the architectural focal point of windows also allows the view of the client’s

garden to be seen. The furniture will have soft curvilinear lines. Traditional geometric patterns will be

mixed with classic prints. Functionally, there will be armoires with glass doors to highlight the collection

of quilts. Lastly, there will be an area for working out.

Upon entering the space there is a large walk in foyer with a coat closet off to the left. I have

placed an entry cabinet in the foyer for keys, gloves and scarves. The drawer storage helps organize

incoming and outgoing mail so that there is not too much clutter, also as my client has proposed. Also

in the main hall just off of the foyer is a large bookshelf for storing the client’s books and plants.

Adjacent to the foyer is a large dining table for entertaining. I chose a round table so that 3’ walking

clearance would surround the perimeter of the dining table and seating. Off to the right of the dining

set there is a kitchen. I chose the dining room to be placed here for ease of access to the kitchen.

Additionally in the dining room I placed a large server/ sideboard for additional storage and counter

space for entertaining. North of the dining room there is the living room. I chose to separate the

spaces (the dining and the living room) with the sofa. This position of the sofa also allows for the north

wall and windows, overlooking the client’s hobby garden and Wisconsin rolling hills, to remain the

focal point of the room. I placed an accent chair on the north wall as a reading nook for my client’s

hobby of reading. There is also a media cabinet along the north wall. It is low profile to be subtle in the

room and not distract from the exterior view. The flooring here and throughout the entire residential

floor plan is a dark wood. I chose this because of it’s earth tone resembling rich soil. I placed a large

trellis print yellowish green rug which compliments the upholstery on the accent chair, the drapes and

the wall color which is dried parsley.

To the left of the common area is the client’s bedroom. I chose this as the location for the bedroom

because of the large closet. I chose a double wide armoire and media cabinet to host the client’s quilt

collection as well as serve as a t.v. viewing area. The furniture within this room is arranged so that there is

adequate room for video aerobics or video yoga in front of the television. I chose to place the media and

armoires next to each other and serve as a wall for privacy from the living area. There is an ottoman for dressing

at the foot of a queen size bed. I chose asymmetrical nightstands as this offers a less formal feel to the space;

cozy is what the client asked for.

All of the furnishings are traditional in style. The fabrics I chose are mostly earth tones of browns, gray,

black and green. For visual interest I chose to add an organic radish color for contrast, whereas the drapery

panels are more vibrant the dining chair upholstery is more muted. The prints are traditional florals and stripes

and the soft floor coverings under the living room, dining room and queen bed have a geometric trellis. The solid

on the sofa is chenille and is suitable for warmth.

In conclusion my client was looking for a traditional space that was informal, cozy and warm without

clutter. The use of aysmmetrical furniture arrangements in the living room and bedroom give an informal yet

cozy appeal. The earth tone color palette with an accent color of organic radish communicate warmth. The

accent color is a subtle change from the traditional color of burgundy likewise. There is an exercise area in the

bedroom with a media center for video aerobics or yoga. There is a reading nook in the living room as well as a

bookshelf in the main hallway. There is adequate storage within the double armoire in the bedroom to host quilt

storage. The furniture arrangement allows for plenty of shelving and floor space for her plant collection. Finally

the furniture arrangement allows the client to relax and view her hobby of gardening overlooking the north wall

elevation.

I chose this tufted, nail head trim sofa

because it is traditional in style which is

the preference of my client. It is to be

uholstered in an earth tone of grayish

brown also according to my client’s

preference. The material will be

chenille to add to the “cozy” feeling

she is looking for.

FIGURE 11. SOFA. THE THOMAS PHEASANT COLLECTION.

I chose this high wing back, tufted

accent chair because it is traditional in

style. It compliments the sofa. It is to be

upholstered in a small print floral filled

with earth tones of yellow green, jade

green with a pop of florals in a radish

color. The chair upholstery will also

compliment the soft flooring with green

and cream. The radish color will

compliment the drapery panels.

FIGURE 12. WING CHAIR. BAKER FURNITURE.

I chose this apothecary media console

because of it’s traditional style. It is low

to the finished floor and does not

dominate the room. I chose this low

profile cabinet to host the television so

that the focal point of the room would

remain the view of the client’s hobby

garden and rolling Wisconsin hills.

FIGURE 14. BEVEL LOW CABINET. BAKER FURNITURE.

I chose this chair because it is

traditional in style and will be

upholstered in a muted raddish color

which is the accent color to the overall

space that is predominately filled with

earth tones. The muted upholstery

choice has more of an earth tone

appearance to blend in but offer a

subtle compliment to the accent color.

Benjamin Moore Natura Interior Zero VOC Paint (Eggshell Finish) 1 Gal.

Virtually odorless Zero VOC's regardless of color Quick return to service 100% Acrylic Provides a durable, Washable film Spatter-resistant

I chose this for the wall color color

because it is light in contrast to all of the furniture yet it compliments the soft flooring and upholstery on the accent chair. It has more of a green tone to it as earth tones do.

Benjamin Moore Natura Interior Zero VOC Paint (Eggshell Finish) 1 Gal.

Virtually odorless Zero VOC's regardless of color Quick return to service 100% Acrylic Provides a durable, Washable film Spatter-resistant

I chose this ceiling paint because it coordinates with the pearl color in the soft flooring. Additionally it adds a light contrast to all the dark furnishings and option 2 materials.

Figure 2. Benjamin Moore Paint. Rich Cream 2153-60

Fabric Material- Chenille. Viscose, Polyester

Natural Fibers I chose this color for the sofa because

chenille is a cozy soft material. It is also a traditional material. The color is of the earth tone palette.

FIGURE 3. SOFA UPHOLSTERY. KRAVET SMART 33001.21

100% Silk Organza, 100% Wool- Natural Fibers/ Sustainable Materials.

I chose this material for the accent/ reading chair in the living room because floral patterns are traditional. It also matches the carpet color with pearl and palm green colors. These are earth tones predominately with a splash of contrasting color for visual interest.

Figure 4. Kravet 8515.3. Embroidered Upholstery

Materials 45% Cotton, 38% Rayon, 17%

Polyester. Sustainable cotton and rayon. Recyclable polyester.

I chose this material for the dining room chair upholstery in that it pulls the color of the accent floral chair around the open floor plan. It is also a traditional herringbone pattern.

Figure 5. Classic Chevron Rose. Kravet.

100% Polyester – Recyclable.

I chose this fabric because it can take on the appearance of velvet which give the space a “cozy” feel. In color it contrasts the predominately earth tone browns and beiges of the room. It has the appearance of an organic radish.

Figure 6. 9843.97 Drapery Fabric. Kravet

100% Cotton.

For use in the bedroom. Floral is traditional and the color adds to the earth tone color palette. It contrasts with the deep ebony furniture selections.

Figure 7. Kravet.

100% Cotton

For use as pillow fabric. Coordinates well with the comforter. Stripes are traditional and adds a dark earth tone contrast if used with the lighter beige furniture according to all option 1 materials.

Figure 8. W3135.412. Kravet Wall Covering.

This product is made up of Bamboo which is plant based and sustainable, contributing to a healthy interior environment.

This hardwood flooring was selected because the client wanted a traditional style in which hardwood floors are frequently utilized.

Figure 9. TERAGREN PORTFOLIO 5” BAMBOO FLOORING

Chosen due to the geometric / traditional style adding visual interest to the overall floor plan in an earth-tone lighter color in contrast to the dark wood furniture selection.

Figure 10. Lasting Greatness. Color: Palm/ Pearl

My design concept did help me finalize my design solutions.

How did learning about design elements and principles in Weeks 1 and 2 help you in your selections

of finishes, materials, and colors? Learning about the design elements and principles in Weeks 1 & 2

enabled me to recall balance in an asymmetrical furnishings/ materials.

Did this info on scale proportion and emphasis help you space plan? The information on emphasis

helped me space plan for this condominium in that I was able to place furniture to highlight the

architectural focal point of the room, which in this case was the north wall elevation.

.

What I see in my project in terms of scale is the height of all the furniture. There is visual balance in the bedroom

for instance among the circular night stand and the rectangular night table. Rhythm is within the repetition of

color pulling all of the rooms together.

In this final project I think what I have done well is to apply the client’s desire for earth tones while adding a

splash of color for contrast and visual interest. I chose to use a floral pattern on the accent chair with a trellis

patterned soft floor covering. The color ties the two prints together and adds interest to the overall floor plan. I

also think I did well accommodating the mood she was trying to achieve which was traditional and warm. My

experience interviewing an interior designer from Ethan Allen, helped me to visualize a space in which

everything did not have to match or be from the same furniture set as if from a showroom. I think I utilized that

experience well in that none of my furniture pieces, with the exception of the bedroom armoire, are from the

same furniture set. Lastly I feel that gave her adequate space for her hobbies.
