What is Experience Design?

Experience design places focus on the user and the experience the user has with a product.

Btw, this isn’t just limited to humans.

Every single day we each have experiences with multiple objects.

We’re surrounded by designed experiences.

I observe

I think about ways to improve experiences.

Tonight I will go over some of the thoughts that go through my head when I observe.

Don’t make me think.

A book!

Classic example of not making me think.

Age old object we all interact with regularly.

Efforts have been made to replace the book with an electronic version, but most attempts have been unsuccessful.

That is until the Kindle.

It acts like a book.

It doesn’t cause eye strain.

It’s compact, yet holds 100’s of books.

Don’t bombard me with information.

Less is more.

This is a simple interface that gives me what I expect.

Who doesn’t like liquid cheese?

Know my tolerances.

Ladies – How many times have you been asked this?

No one buys your product because they want to open it.

Don’t cause wrap rage by making it a pain in the ass to get to your product.

Don’t be afraid to make me laugh.

Not all products always have to be professional.

Watch me in my own environment.

Pay attention to what users do, not what they say.

You can learn a lot from observation.

Great example from Alton Brown.

Ingredients are organized by type.

You can easily prep and follow the instructions.

Be honest with me about the experience.

Pedi Paws

The commercial shows docile cats and dogs excited to get their nails trimmed by this device.

Then I opened the package.

I have tried all of this.

My dog is still afraid of this product.

Remember, my dog is also the user of this product.

Don’t make me a prisoner of your product.

Hopefully, we all shower.

It becomes a routine part of our day.

What if your shower was an experience?

Wouldn’t it be nice to be fully surrounded by shower heads?

What if there were speakers in the shower so you could listen to your morning talk show?

Know who I am.

There are a lot of jokes about these phones.

You aren’t the user of this product. Neither am I.

Aimed at senior citizens and the not so tech savvy.

Don’t be afraid to stay inside the box.

Don’t think outside the box just for the sake of it.

Sometimes classic interfaces are the best.

Try thinking outside the box, within the box.

Appeal to my emotions & give me an experience.

Apple is awesome at this!

Opening their products is as much of an experience as owning them.

Remember, we’re all designers.

We decide what we want to own.

We design our world around us to better serve our needs.
