Types of Living Room Textiles

CURTAINS

Curtains are the most popular and common window treatment used in living room. They come in several different styles, colors, and patterns that offer many options as well as function.

Typically, curtains are made of lighter weight fabric and sold in packages containing two panels.

They are made to hang from a curtain rod or rings attached to a rod, which is installed just above the window frame.

DRAPES

Drapes are sold in panels of fabric with many different lengths, colors, and patterns but are normally made of heavier fabric, lined, pleated and hung on a traverse rod with a string so you can easily open and close them.

SHEERS

Sheers are typically used with curtains and drapes for added decoration and don’t offer much privacy or shade from the sun.

The low cost of many types of these panels allows the smart decorator to have the option of changing them frequently.

VALANCES

Valances are decorative top treatments used with drapes, curtains, or shades for added decoration and to conceal the mounting hardware. Valances are swathes of fabric draped around the top of a window frame that can be pleated, arched, gathered or flat, straight or shaped, and mounted on dust boards, poles or rods.

Throws and blankets

THROWS Whether draped over

shoulders or the arm of a sofa, blankets and throws may just be the easiest way to add warmth to the living room. Throws are for adding color or texture or an invitation to snuggle. They can instantly update an old armchair to give a whole new feeling to a room.

BLANKETS A large piece of woolen

or similar material used as a covering intended to keep the user warm, especially while lying down in a living room.

Types of blankets are woven acrylic, knitted polyester, fur, cotton, fleece and wool. Blankets also come with exotic crafting and exotic material such as crocheted afghan or a silk covering. 

Both are floor coverings with the only difference in size. Rugs are smaller than carpets.

Rugs and Carpets

RUGS Rugs do not usually exceed

the length of 2 cm. They may be used as centerpiece flooring or hung on wall. They may be used as foot rugs sofa or table décor.

The style of the rug varies with the purpose Hand Knotted rugs may have intricate patterns of traditional Persian style or more contemporary types but have a rather fine finish.

Types of rugs- Tufted rugs, Synthetic rugs, Hair-on-hide rugs, cotton rugs, woolen rugs, embroidered.

CARPETS

Anything larger than 2m is termed as carpets. They are primarily used as floor coverings. They accentuate the theme of the living room.

They may be hand knotted, tufted, machine made or felt wool. The hand knotted may have intricate or geometrical pattern. Machine made plain or with an overall pattern are used for wall to wall coverings.

A cushion is a soft bag of some ornamental material, stuffed with wool, hair, feathers, polyester staple fiber, non-woven material. It may be used for sitting or kneeling upon, or to soften the hardness or angularity of a chair or couch. Decorative cushions often have a patterned cover material, and are used as decoration for furniture.

CUSHIONS Customarily, thin layers or

sheets of foam are placed on the suspension system and covered by either the main decorative fabric or by a less expensive non-visible platform or lining cloth to reduce wear on reversible cushions.

A platform is formed for the seat, back and arm ‘sitting’ surfaces of the sofa, according to the design, onto which separate upholstered cushions are placed

There are three main types of cushion interior – foam, feather or polyester fiber.

Upholstery is the work of providing furniture, with padding, springs, webbing, and fabric. The word upholstery comes from the Middle English word upholder, which referred to a tradesman who held up his goods.

UPHOLSTERY

UPHOLSTERY Traditional upholstery is a

craft which evolved over centuries for padding and covering chairs, seats and sofas, before the development of sewing machines synthetic fabrics and plastic foam.

Using a solid wood or webbed platform, it can involve the use of springs, lashings, stuffing's of animal hair, grasses and coir, wools, hessians, scrims, bridle ties, stuffing ties, blind stitching, top stitching, flocks and wadding all built up by hand.

A tablecloth is a cloth used to cover a table. Some are mainly ornamental coverings, which may also help protect the table from scratches and stains. Other tablecloths are designed to be spread on a dining table before laying out tableware and food.

TABLE CLOTH Ornamental tablecloths can

be made of almost any material, including delicate fabrics like embroidered silk. Some cloths are designed as part of an overall table setting, with coordinating napkins, placemats, or other decorative pieces. Special kinds of tablecloth include runners which overhang the table at two ends only and table protectors to provide a padded layer under a normal cloth.
