WORKING IN GROUP #3

Understanding the design of a RF Circuit Design

Where are we in this course?

• Working in Group #1– You learned basic RF circuit design tools (Smith

Chart, S parameters, Matching networks…)

• Working in Group #2– You learned RF Technology fundamentals (MIC,

MMIC, RFIC)

• …and, of course, team working (welcome to real life!)

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

• Picture yourself as a telecoms systems engineer…

• You need to include and specify RF equipment in your system…

• There are several technological approaches to such an equipment…

• … and many vendors

• ¡You need to understand the RF design in order to take decisions!

What do you need to learn RF Circuits Technology and

Design?

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

• Picture yourself as a telecoms systems engineer…

• You need to include and specify RF equipment in your system…

• There are several technological approaches to such an equipment…

• … and many vendors

• ¡You need to understand the RF design in order to take decisions!

The case

• Your company is analyzing this device. You should produce a report in which all the information that is presented in the article is checked and discussed. That report is crucial: your company is willing to begin business with the company that has designed that GPS amplifier and you need be confident on their capabilities of designing suitable RF solutions for undertaking innovative challenges.

The Device

What do you need if you are honored with such an

assignment?

First: Team Work (Groups of Four)

Second: Theoretical Background

Make a list of a) 10 general technical themes that are needed to

understand the article (each group of four)

….. and study them

Third: Plan the Report

Make a list of b) 10 points for discussion that should lead to

producing the report.

….. and discuss within the team

Fourth: Write the Report

• Include– The theoretical-background discussion– The 10-point discussion

• Discuss the weaknesses and strengths of the proposed solution– You can compare, if you wish, with other

commercial solutions

Do not forget…

• You should analyze the information from the technical standpoint but also from any other business vision

• We shall work on the business perspective in next working group #4, but also keep it in mind from now

How do you learn the theoretical background?

GRADING (1/4)

• Define 10 technical themes and 10 point for discussions at the beginning of the period– One deliverable per group of four

• Weight in grading– 20% of this working-in-group grade– 5% of total course grade

GRADING (2/3)

• Make a list of those classmates (from other groups) that better answered your concerns in the forum. – The most "voted" will receive a reward in the

form of an extra grading

• Weight in grading– 40% of this working-in-group grade– 10% of total course grade

GRADING (3/3)

• Peer Evaluation– Concept clarity (30%)– All members (not some of them, but ALL of

them) of the group went into the concepts in depth (20%)

– In depth tackling of themes (50%)

• Weight in grading– 40% of this working-in-group grade– 15% of total course grade

GRADING (4/4)

• Exam– About the most conceptual points of the work

• Weight in grading– 40% of this working-in-group grade– 10% of total course grade
