Resume 101

There is more than one way to skin a banana!!!

If the first 2 statements are true

The third statement is the conclusion

If God is love

And love is blind

Then Ray Charles is God

If your resume is matched to the position…

If your resume is matched to the position

And your cover letter compliments your resume

You are on your way to becoming a brand.

You are on your way to becoming a brand.

But, they can’t hit a target that they can’t see!

Your resume is a marketing tool, plain and simple. It’s designed to get the attention of the hiring manager and compel them to call you.

Let’s face it…most resumes are plain, simple, and boring as hell.

Many Jobs…Many Resumes…Very Little Time

• You only have a small window of time to make that solid impression. So, it is extremely important to have a unique resume that shows off your individuality.

• Preparing is caring and you need to take the time to show more than just the basics. Show how and why you stand out from everyone else in that pile of resumes.

Success for overachievement? Let me be perfectly clear.

• There are more than 500 people standing outside the door waiting to work for this company…what will make you stand out?

• Clarity. Lack of clarity is probably more responsible for frustration and underachievement than any other single factor.

• A resume needs to be on point, and present only that information necessary to get you the phone call.

• Remember, the hiring manager is likely to make a decision in that 3 to 10 second window, so keep it short and highlight your best attributes to maximize your chances.

Don’t trust everything I tell you. Do your own research for what works for you.

Make your resume tech-friendly.

• While you still need a paper version to bring to networking events and job interviews, in 2014 your resume mustt be designed to meet the needs of computers, smartphones, tablets and the human eye.

Snail mail your resume.• While that may sound old

school, it’s actually a clever form of reverse psychology. Mailing your resume will get a hiring manager’s attention exactly because most are sent electronically.

• REALLY want to make an impression? FedEx ! Track the package, know when they signed for it, give them some time to read it.

• Then send them an email.

Power up your LinkedIn Profile. It should be a personal and engaging complement to your resume, not a mirror image.LinkedIn offers the capability to link to files, videos and portfolios, so take advantage of those features. That way, you’ll paint a portrait that is more vibrant than your resume while impressing prospective employers with your technological savvy.
