My mother would speak to every one she knew and met (including flora & fauna) in Kannada.

The fact that they didn’t know or understand the language never deterred her from talking about…

her garden (“my plants laugh when it rains you know . . .”), her choir members (“Mrs. Reginald sounds like a man!”)

and of course, her 2 precious daughters (“they are my eyes!”).

I grew up watching people listen intently to my mother, captivated with her stories and actually respond with a smile, a hug, a sympathetic nod, a giggle, a guffaw, a question, an encore even!

Till today I haven’t guessed her secret, her ability to reach out to every living being, to connect with them and build everlasting bonds . . .

without speaking their language.

The power of communication fascinates me. The challenge to express my ideas, my beliefs, my thoughts, my

experiences, my knowledge in 20cc, in black & white, in words and in 30 seconds of

film to utter strangers (and occasionally the whole nation), never tires me.
