INTRODUCTIONTwo types of light sources are commonly used for optical fiber in communications applications. These sources are the light emitting diode(LED) and the semiconductor laser(or laser diode).

Objectives/Goals The objectives of this works are To Introduce optical fiber communication system. To study high speed data transmission though optical

fiber using semiconductor laser To obtain the performance characteristics of a

designed laser

MATERIALS Fibers of Glass Usually 120 micrometers in diameter Used to carry signals in the form of light over distances upto 50Km without any repeater Core-thin glass center of the fiber where light travels Cladding-outer optical material surrounding the core Buffer Coating-plastic coating that protects the fiber

Types of Optical Fiber Multimode Fiber Single Mode Fiber

Types of Semiconductor Lasers

i. Emission dependent : 1) Edge Emitting Laser 2)Surface Emitting Laser

ii. Wavelength dependent : 1) Short wavelength Laser 2) long wavelength Laser

STRUCTURE OF A LASER

The Structure of a laser is combined with Homo-junction, Hetero-junction, P-type & N-type materials with also energy

band as a recombination mechanisms

Rate Equations

• The rate of carrier density of a Laser is

•The rate of change of photon density of a Laser is

Rate Equations

• The threshold current of a Laser is

•The Modulation response with frequency can be expressed as

Rate Equations

• The K-factor is define as

•The d-factor of Laser is related to the differential gain and can be written as

Rate Equations

• The Resonant Frequency of a laser is define as

•The output of Laser is written as

Methodology For the codes & simulation work we

will use two softwares.Theyare

Matlab Optisym simulator

TransmitterEDFA & SOA will use as a optical amplifier
