Workplace InnovationCreating a mass movement

Workplace innovation: benefits?• Europe needs ‘Gazelles’: SME’s that grow quickly. Innovation

is the main driver of these SME’s.– I&A (Belgium) and TNO (NL) have shown that the main difference

between not-growers and Gazelles is Workplace Innovation!– Gazelles have shown growth of turnover of 50% higher than non-

growers in the period 2007-2010! (median-comparison, TNO).– Gazelles, using WPI, show substantial growth in new products (I&A).

• Any company starting with WPI shows growth jumps from at least 10% (Van Reenen, 2011; ILO, 2013).

Why doesn’t everybody do it?• What is Workplace Innovation? There is an information

problem.• Diffusion of WPI is slow (companies tend to wait for others to

start, free rider behavior)• Companies need a push in the back: countries having WPI-

programmes see more growth

• So, with a little help of your friends, WPI will flourish!

EUWIN = five corner stones

EUWIN is…, is not …

• It is about …– Upscaling– Collecing attractive ideas– Building support systems– Well focusing our message

• It is not about …– Delivering funds to partners but showing the opportunities– Doing case studies or research but build on existing results

Four axes for your supportEffective demand- Policy support- Metrics- Procurement

COMPANIES NEEDTO CHANGE IN A SYSTEMIC WAY

Effective supply- Better support- Data- Examples

Create uplift and linkages- Networks- Partnerships

Eliminate barriers- Resistance employer organisations- Mistrust policy makers- Competing networks

Support in effective supply• Better support to companies

– Can participants connect our examples to companies?– We are delivering a toolbox: it would be nice to connect this to you– But supply your tools to it too!

• Can participants ensure data collection with reference to WPI?– EU-OSHA: ESENER– Other countries?

• Can you connect their examples to ours? – We are rebuilding a simple ‘story box’: supply your examples too!

Support in effective demand- Policy support

- Promote WPI among your policy makers- Link your events to the EUWIN-scheme (let us know)

- Metrics- See to it that WPI get measured: use the MEADOW survey instructions(http://ec.europa.eu/research/social-sciences/projects/229_en.html)

- Procurement- Make WPI a pre-condition for projects

Support in uplift and linkages- Networks

- Help our networking activities: our regional coordinators are planning ‘campaigns’.- Participate in our four platforms: Social Partner, Knowledge Partner, Enterprise Partner,

Policy Partner - Partnerships

- Promote EUWIN as an associate network

Help eliminate barriers- Resistance employer organisations: WPI is a precondition for growth!- Uncertainty of policy makers: WPI is a market failure- Let us collaborate: for our public good = healthy and productive workers

How can EUWIN help you?- Cross-reference in events to one another- Co-hosting of the large conferences?: Sofia 2014; Leuven 2015- Information exchange/Co-influencing on opportunities:

- EU-calls, EU-networks to develop the tenders- Support each’s ideas- Use our instruments, invite us to present/discuss

So, what do we expect from an EUWIN-ambassador?

• Each member become separate member of the EUWIN-network– Enlist in the database (see end of presentation) this shows exposure

• Help identify WPI-companies– Can ambassadors identify such companies for us?– Get into contact: let them register

• Be an ambassador towards companies for EUWIN– Connect the information to the regional coordinator– Connect to the examples– Supply examples for the ‘knowledge base’– Help select and approach companies to participate in the events– Give your opinion on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter

You and EUWIN• If you want to join euwin, if you want to become an ambassador, register
