July 14, 2016
Heart healthy butter, biomolecular shields to make therapeutic drugs last longer in the human body and an
ocean-friendly algae based vaccine for fish are just some of the projects being developed at IndieBio EU -
The world’s leading synthetic biology accelerator programme in Cork in 2016.
Thirteen start-ups from Costa Rica, Ecuador, Canada, India, France, Ireland and the United States are
working out of laboratory space in UCC, Cork to develop lean startups and tackle emerging markets with
unique solutions. Of those 13 there are 4 Irish biotechnology startups taking part. The programme supports
individuals and companies with an early stage prototype through investment, laboratory space and
mentorship in a mini-MBA format.
“IndieBio carefully selects teams from around the world who have the potential and the capacity to create
world-changing biotech solutions for problems that were previously seen as intractable,” said Bill Liao,
IndieBio founder and European venture partner for SOSV - The Accelerator VC.
“When the cost of doing business in a particular sector gets ten millions times cheaper in just 12 years any
savvy investor must take notice. Independent biotechnology has undergone just such a recent revolution."
Cork was chosen as the location for the programme for the proximity of key academic partners, with a
number of life sciences firms and business support available. Ireland and Cork could become a major player
in synthetic biology.
