WHAT IS SOCIAL MEDIA? Social media refers to interaction

among people in which they create, share, and/or exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks.

“A group of Internet-based applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations”

CLASSIFICATION

A BOON OR BANE? Social media is a good thing or a bad

thing? That is the most frequently asked question today.

Well, there are always two sides of everything.

Most people admire it as a revolutionary invention and some seem to take it as a negative impact on the society.

THE GOOD SIDE

FRIENDS & RELATIONS  Facebook users are uploading approximately

300 million photos to Facebook per day, up 20% from earlier this year. 

Even usage of the photo-sharing tool Instagram, purchased by Facebook in April of 2012, has increased by 1,179% in the last year.

Finding and connecting with people like you. Finding and following your role models.

REDUCES COMMUNICATION BARRIERS. Voicing your opinion. Address a large number of people on

different topics. Grouping the like minded.

BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES Creates business through increasing

network. Promotion of Products. Expanding Business. Helps in Brand revamping. Advertising. Cost effective. Free Publicity of the product. Product awareness. The presence of a firm on the web offers a

wonderful opportunity to reach out to the potential clients and customers.

ENHANCES PRODUCTIVITY 46 % of workers say that their productivity

has greatly or somewhat increased because of social media use in the office.

More than one-third (37 %) say that they could do their job better if their organisation’s management was more on-board in the use of social tools in the workplace.

2 in 5 employees believe social tools encourage more collaboration and 31 %say that they would be willing to spend their own money on a tool if it made them more efficient at their job.
