Sound deadening must be divided into:
Sandwich sound deadening Single sound deadening
Sandwich sound deadening: Sandwich sound deadening (constrained layer application) is mainly used for steel structures with a ratio of 4:1:1 or 2:1:1. For aluminium structures the ratio is 4:3:1. This means: Example 1: Structure is 8 mm STEEL Apply a 2 mm SLP-COMP product with a 2 mm perforated (10%) steel counter (plates). Example 2: Structure is 8 mm ALUMINIUM Apply a 2 mm SLP-COMP product with a 2 mm perforated (10%) aluminium counter plate(s).
- Important note: Various products are on the market as sandwich sound deadening materials. The loss factor (as shown below)
is the most important parameter related to sound deadening and this factor must be compared with alternative products (loss factor versus temperature).

Sound absorption materials are used in order to reduce the air- borne noise levels in a cabin or room. As the
density is relative low the sound insulation values are relative poor.
The above mentioned image indicates Melamine Foam (BASF product) with and without an acoustic open finishing. An acoustic open finishing is requered in order to maintain the absorption values. In case an aluminium foil finishing is applied the sound absorption values become zero (0) and the material becomes a thermal isolator instead of a sound absorber.
In case foam products are used in Engine Rooms it must be in compliance with CE-Certificate 94/25/CE amended by 2003/44/EC (ISO 4589-3:1996).
Perforated plates (30% perforation) or our SLP - SONIC AGLP plates can be used as a final finishing inside the Engine Room (hull sides only due to direct transmission of air- borne noise). Engine Room boundaries adjacent to accommodations must be covered with SLP – SONIC PVP plates. (Melamine) Foam materials are often used onboard lightweight structures. Foam products are fire resistant
(most cases) however they are NOT NON-COMBUSTIBLE!!

SLP- SONIC PVP is a sandwich metal sheet, designed to reduce vibrations and noise transmission in metal constructions. SLP-SONIC PVP consists of two metal sheets with a thin viscoelastic inner layer. The material operates on the constrained
layer damping principle. When a sheet or structure made of SLP-SONIC PVP is caused to vibrate the shear forces in the constrained viscoelastic layer cause the vibration energy to be converted into heat.
PRODUCT INFORMATION SHEET: SLP – SONIC PVP
Type: Material: Thickness: SLP – SONIC PVP Steel 1.6 – 6.2 mm SLP – SONIC PVP RVS 1.6 – 6.2 mm SLP – SONIC PVP Aluminium 2.1 – 6.2 mm
Loss factor and Temperature: Metal constructions normally have a very low loss factor (ability to convert vibration energy into heat) typically in the range
of 0.001 – 0.01. The loss factor can be increased to 0.3 – 0.8 when using SLP-SONIC PVP. This in turn means that the amplitude of resonant vibrations occurring in the construction when it is subjected to structure- borne sound, will be much
lower than for a standard metal construction.
The range of SLP-SONIC PVP can be supplied to give maximum damping at 20oC, 60oC and 80oC.

MARINE PROPULSION is divided into:
Elastic mounting systems Flexible couplings Exhaust systems Sound shields Elastic mounting systems:
Silent Line represents Rubber Design for marine applications onboard Yachts above 40 meter and VCE for Yachts below 40 meter. As the Yachts above 40 meter are mostly Custom Build please contact us for product information (mounts to be selected using 6-DOF calculations). For Yachts under 40 meter and for secondary machinery we use VCE mounts. The most common mounts are TM / IM and GM mountings. Please contact us for selecting the correct mount for your application.
Flexible couplings: Pending on the type (output) of the main diesel engine we recommend VULKAN or CENTA for the large engines and AQUADRIVE or CENTA for the smaller engines. The coupling (from stiffness point of view) must be balanced with the stiffness of the elastic mounting system (6-DOF calculation required).
Exhaust systems: We represent TIO (Dutch manufacturer of silencers / mufflers) for Yacht exhaust systems. A wide range of silencers are offered pending on your requirements (noise reduction, space available, exhaust above or below waterline, wet / dry silencer etc.). Please contact us for more information.
Sound shields: Silent Line is producing (and designing) Custom Build sound shields for generator sets (see image below). Please contact us for more information.
