Prevent Ice Plugs with the FM Approved Dry Air Pac for Freezer Room Fire Protection

Preview:

DESCRIPTION

The Dry Air Pac from General Air Products is an FM Approved air compressor, desiccant dryer package designed to eliminate ice plugs in freezer room fire protection sprinkler systems. The Dry Air Pac can also be used to slow the effects of corrosion in dry pipe sprinkler systems and is used frequently in critical applications where a moisture free environment is a must.

Basics of Compressed Air

Basics of Compressed Air

Air Compressors

Compressed Air: Atmospheric air compressed by a mechanical device to increase its pressure.

• Compressed air is an energy source – often considered the 4th utility.

Moisture

Dewpoint: Temperature at which moisture will occur.

• Example: 75ºF, 75 RH, 25 CFM = 4.5 gallons of water per day

Air Dryers

• Refrigerated, 30ºF – 39ºF dewpoint

• Chemical, down to -100ºF dewpoint

Basics of Compressed Air

Compression Ratio

It takes 7.8 Ft3 of atmospheric air (14.69 PSIA) to make one actual cubic foot of air at 100 psig. (psia / atmosphere)

Ice Plugs

The Problem - Ice Plugs

• Ice Plug formation causes partial and eventually complete blockage of the dry-pipe system.

•Factory Mutual, after several years of study, found that 50% to 70% of the dry pipe systems inspected were plagued with Ice Plug problems.

The Cause - Ice Plugs

• Evaporating Priming Water

• Water left in the lines after annual trip test.

• The Major Culprit, moisture laden compressed air meeting freezing temperatures in the Dry Pipe System.

(Contrary to popular belief, using air from the freezer room for the dry pipe systemWill not solve the ice plug problem)

The Solution …

• Freezer Rooms

• Cold Storage

• Parking Garages
