Paparazzi – Lady Gaga

+PASTICHE An artistic work in a style that imitates that of another

work, artist or period. This is self-conscious imitation.

In the Paparazzi video, there are generic conventions of a ‘Golden Age’ Hollywood film of which Lady Gaga is the leading lady.

There are also several narrative and stylistic similarities and intertextual references to Sunset Boulevard (1950).

+INTERTEXTUALITY

One media text referring to another.

In the Paparazzi video, there is a blurring of binary opposites as Lady Gaga is seen as a humanoid (referencing Fembot, Metropolis).

+REFERENCING POPULAR CULTURE

Such as Minnie Mouse

+HITCHCOCK HOMAGE

Makes reference to the film ‘Vertigo’

The use of icy, blonde ‘femme fatale’ character is also a hallmark of a Hitchcock film.

+GENDER BOUNDARIES

The paparazzi video plays around with gender boundaries a lot as Lady Gaga is portrayed to be a strong, confident and dominant woman.
