What is open innovation?

“…a philosophy or a mindset that they should embrace within their organization.

This mindset should enable their organization to work with external input to the innovation

process just as naturally as it does with internal input”

Open innovation as a term will disappear in 5-7 years!

Faster pace, shrinking window of opportunity, less time for cash cows

Open innovation and biz model innovation is key for becoming competitively unpredictable!

We need a more holistic approach to innovation!

You need to become preferred partner of choice (different value pools) within ecosystems!

Corporate innovation teams have many more options today – and this keeps growing!

They are still learning how to embrace OI, but they learn fast – and much faster than TTO’s!

Many losers – and few winners who are able to position themselves as preferred partners!

Few, very productive partnerships – with unusual suspects! – A few insights:

Project timelines; not semester/quarter cadence while taking ownership for time, budget deliverables

Aligned values (transparency), non-arrogant behavior

Fair pricing

Too few universities try to become “preferred partner of choice”! Experiment, try new things!

Do you really have the skills and mindset needed for the future of innovation?

1) Intrapreneurial skills

2) Networking talent

3) Communication skills

4) Strategic influencing

5) Adaptive fast learner

6) Balanced optimism

7) Tolerance for uncertainty

8) Passion

It must be a key objective for corporate innovation teams to educate – up as well as down!

What is the purpose of “TTO’s” and how does this stack up with this new era of innovation?

Who is the real enemy of “TTO’s”? Are they set up to fail? Do they repeat themselves?

Why is there so much talk about technology / IPR when focus moves towards business models?

Upgrade your innovation mindset and toolbox!

Identify the types of external input / value pools that fit your situation! Become a preferred partner!

Start innovating on how you innovate (experimentation, small bets, quick wins)

Work the internal and external stakeholders! Become better communicators!
