My Advice…

• … is NOT LEGAL or FINANCIAL

• I’m not a lawyer• I’m not an accountant• I don’t play either on TV• PLEASE, CHECK THINGS

OUT FOR YOURSELF!

CD Sales Online

• The #1 site is CD Baby

• In Canada, IndiePool is also a major online seller

Derek Sivers

• Just a guy who wanted to sell his CDs online in 1997

• Found out it wasn’t that easy!

• Put together his own system, ended up using it for his and friend’s CD sales

• Founded CD Baby “by accident”

CD Baby’s take…

• As of today, CD Baby’s deal is:– They charge a one-time set-up fee of $35– They keep $4 for every CD sold, no matter

what you charge

CD Baby set-up

• CD Baby sets up a page for each CD

• Contains image, description, streaming audio links and of course most important, purchase option!

CD Baby All-CDs Page

• A handy page not everyone seems to use

iTunes and other Digital Sales

• Takes time to get set-up

• See if your CD sales provider does this– And what they

charge for it!

• Most sales through iTunes, but others are growing

Digital Aggregators

• Digital Aggregators will get your music into the various online music services

• They will take a cut of sales for this service

Aggregator Comparison Chart

• Check out the chart at:– http://www.mosesavalon.com/digidist.shtml

• Recommends TuneCore over CD Baby and others for digital distribution

iTunes

• iTunes is the #1 digital music sales store• You make 2/3 of sales, less your aggreator’s fee• You pretty much NEED to be in this store, at

least for now

Others Digital Music Stores…• 3Guppies.com• Arvato• AudioLunchbox• AudiolunchboxSubscription• Bitmunk• BuyMusic• Chondo• Daiki• Destra• DigiPie• DigitalKiosk• eMusic• Flip• GreatIndieMusic• HearMusic• Inprodicon• Intent Media Works• Interia• IslandBeats• iSound• Liquid Digital Media• LoudEye• Mouzika• MP3-Extension• MP3tunes• Mperia• MSN Music• MusicIsHere• MusicMatch• MusicNet• MusicNow

• Muze• MyKidsTunes• Napster• Nareos• NewViews Music• NextRadio• Nifty• NTT• PassAlong• PayPlay• PeerImpact• PlayIndies• Puretracks• QTRnote• Rhapsody• Ruckus• RuleRadio• SNOCAP• SonicGarden• Sonific• Sony Connect• Theta Music• Tradebit• TreeTunes• USEN Corporation• Verizon V CAST• Weed• Wippit• WrapFactory• YooPeDoo• I probably left out some…

Alternative Sales Options

• Online sales offline:– DiscRevolt and other are offering physical

cards that you can sell to fans directly

Creating your own store?

• You set-up a store with:– Google Checkout– PayPal Merchant Services– others

• Or you can set-up your own store with interactive web software (PHP, ASP, etc.)

• BIG PRO: Better margins• BIG CON: Potentially a lot more work

iTunes URLS

• Copy iTunes URL for inclusion in your webpage

• Right-click or Control-click on artist or song name to copy it

Where ever you sell…

• Make sure you promote on – your site– your blog– myspace– everywhere!
