Bridging Business and IT
Anne Rutkowski
Academic Director
Information Management
What is Information Management about?
Information Systems & Technology (IS/IT) have matured the last
decency. It has shifted from a support role to one where it is an
inherent part of a firm’s value proposition
IS/IT enables
• New organizational forms,
• The redesign of business processes, and
• The development of innovative business models and new business
strategies
2
Why is IM crucial for business?
•Critical decision to manage IS/IT have to be taken by digital
managers not by technological experts
•Technological innovation will keep disturbing business, providing
new opportunities
• Modern business must be able to take advantage of the
transformative and wealth generating potential of IS/IT
•Business needs to be able to assess which IS/IT best supports their
business model and invest in those
•Business depends critically on innovation and creativity in the use
and application of data for decision-making
Big data: Example of new challenges
• Big data is a new trend or hype.
• About getting more value from the huge amounts of data generated
by IT
• The key question for business and our master students is how big
data can be applied to the benefit of companies, individuals and
society.
• “Business Intelligence /Analytic” with Prof. H. Daniels and H.
Weigand
4
IT can disrupt industries and…help mitigate risks
• Look for example at the retail industry where companies like
Amazon are revolutionizing retail.
• Again, the added value of our master students on the market will
come from understanding the implications of disruptive IT innovation
to the businesses and creating feasible paths from the current world
to the changed world after the IT disruption has done its work
• Management of knowledge and Innovation and IT trends with Dr. B.
van de Walle our risk management specialist and myself
5
More experts….and top researchers to educate the
new digital manager

European employment observatory newsletter
Employers are experiencing difficulties in recruiting staff,
especially for high-skilled jobs.
It is predicted that there could be shortages in areas like
the Information Communication Technology (ICT) with an
estimated deficit for the whole of Europe of 700,000 for
ICT specialists by 2015 and of one million by 2025.
To boost the EU employment rate to reach 75 % by 2020,
the European Commission launched its flagship initiative
