Life At Home

Industry The war caused

Franklin Roosevelt to make a decision to shift the economy of the United States.

The government took control of the situation and asked many companies to produce specific materials.

These were crucial to the production of airplanes, tanks, ships, and other weapons.

Certain materials such as rubber, aluminum, and copper were needed to produce equipment for the troops.

Airplane production drastically increased during the war.

The specialization of products also allowed the United States to make alliances with new countries.

They traded with many countries in South America to get materials for production.

This new boom of production created many new jobs. Who are going to fill these positions while the men are off fighting?

Review of On Task Activity

Women With the men

overseas, women took many roles that were traditionally set for men.

Many women took jobs and played a major role in the work force.

Women such as Rosina Bonavita became famous for their work in factories.

She became known as “Rosie the Riveter” for help role in the production of airplanes.

Women in the Service Women also served in the armed forces. They were not allowed to fight in combat,

but their service was just as important. They served in the medical field,

intelligence, and administration.

Back Home Back home many Americans were looking

for ways to support the cause. The government stepped in and asked for

many people to do their part.

Rationing Materials were scarce.

The government came up with rationing. This is the limiting of goods and products so the troops could have supplies.

Such supplies as sugar, butter, and coffee were rationed.

Ration books were designed to help with the regulated consumption of these goods.

Recycling Recycling played a major

role in the war effort at home.

Copper, Aluminum, and rubber were asked to be recycled.

The mints used such metals as steel to make pennies. This was to cut down on the use of copper.

War Bonds The U.S. government needed money to help fund the war

effort. They issued War Bonds to people. War bonds are where people loan money to the

government and receive compensation in return.

The Media Many organizations decided to show their

support for the war by producing posters. These posters were designed to recruit and

persuade the public to agree with the organizations.

Characters such as Uncle Sam, Captain America, and Rosie the Riveter were used on these posters.
