As part of its growth in West Bengal, a new IT SEZ (special economic zone) campus for TCS on a 40-acre site in the IT corridor of Rajarhat, Newtown Kolkata is being planned .
The “Courtyard scheme” is conceived as a large campus with multiple courtyards providing a series of enclosed, landscaped spaces that delight the senses and become the focus of the buildings.

Based on Building orientation and Solar radiation, different skins are developed for each side. For South Facade, the skin consists of a multi-layer system, where a alternative pattern of shading and glazing elements rest on masonry base. While West and East facades have additional louvers for Sun protection, the North Facade is made of clear and translucent glazing with vertical fins.

The Tata Medical Center provides exemplary cancer care, education, and research in South Asia; it has been recognized for setting a new benchmark for healthcare design. Starting with an unremarkable site on Kolkata’s periphery, a campus-like “hospital in a garden” was shaped, with care, research, and academic functions in interlinked structures. The design is contextually and climatically responsive - buildings are oriented to capture prevailing winds; deeply recessed openings reduce glare while bringing in light and extending views; courtyards foster interaction; and its refined materiality showcases local craftsmanship.
The architectural expression of the Phase Two addition is designed as a natural extension of the existing campus. Careful attention has been given to the design of the exterior facade, sizes of windows as well as the amount of glass curtain wall and louvers used. The architecture of the addition applies best practices and lessons learned from the initial buildings and creates a contextually responsive and technically sound building.

Amity University is creating an innovative new campus for education on a beautiful 26 acre hillside site in Panvel, outside Mumbai, India. The campus is conceived as an integrated “fusion campus”, with an emphasis on 21st century learning environments and interdisciplinary education across its faculties. The fusion campus for higher education is conceived as two ribbons of program space – academic and residential – that zigzag on facing sides of a central spine of shared outdoor spaces. They rest on an expansive podium of shared academic and social space, with multiple courtyards carved out of it to encourage vertical linkages between activities. This core concept underscores the manner in which contemporary students engage in multiple activities simultaneously, and replaces the linear relationship between academic and residential spaces with a more fluid one to shape a 24/7 campus. On both sides of the campus, the design arrangement actively shapes courtyards, plazas and gardens of varied scales and functionality, and harnesses the ability of outdoor spaces to support the educational, social and civic activities on campus. Further, the forms of the buildings relate to the surrounding landscape of hills and plateaus.

The challenge of this project was to design a contemporary,sleek yet traditionally rooted facade scheme for a cricket stadium, where the structural parameters were already set. This called for an in depth study of different possible facade schemes in combination with various materials.
The design also had to take clues from local architecture, craft,and culture. Finally, the entire structure would have to be a lightweight construction at a moderate budget.

The design process explored various design options, in terms of form, material and cost.
The final design, a result of the process, showcases a very minimalist yet visually strong facade. Clues from local materials, color, and culture were interpreted in a modern expression. The design proposes use of terra-cotta/reinforced concrete earth colored fins, which repeats along the facade to create an uniform expression, which unifies the different and apparently scattered elements of the stadium and creates a strong identity. On a further level, same fins with darker color are used to depict local sports as a graphic which adds flavor to the design.

The competition brief required a signature building form for the new campus, The efficiency of space, yet remained a crucial aspect of design like any IT office space. The resultant form became a monolithic structure, with a rationalized floor plate. The form lifts and undulates to allow access and other program requirements.

Given the unique monolithic shape, the facade design had to take in account the constantly varying angle of the surface from the Sun. Hence, the shading element of the facade had to be adoptable, yet somewhat modular. To optimize the system, different depth, width, and frequency of shading fins were tested across the surface.

Facade Development
The vertical panels are oriented based on the analysis result following the Sun path to provide optimum shading to the glazing. The continuous horizontal bands provide necessary shade to the South and West facade.

The Master Plan sets out a vision for an IT campus in Bhubaneswar that is undergoing swift expansion – at full build out the project is expected to have 1.2 million square feet of office and support spaces for about 11,500 persons. The campus is being built in a phased manner, with the 2nd and 3rd phases currently under construction.
The design concept is characterized by a series of repetitive, modern, and efficient office buildings that move dynamically and diagonally across the site, from southwest to northeast, creating a vibrant, active, and distinctive campus setting. The location and orientation of the buildings are both environmentally responsive as well as respectful of the orientation of the existing Phase 1 complex.
Architecturally, the new image is intended to visually reposition and upgrade the appearance of the existing campus. The buildings have a clean and contemporary look, with a combination of insulated metal panel skin, glazing and shading devices.

To support the company’s VIP guests and executives, a boutique hotel is being designed as the new landmark within the campus. Situated prominently on a hill above the complex, the Guest House features 70 rooms, three presidential suites, gourmet dining, a fitness center, and multiple meeting and conference spaces. Small pedestrian ways link the Guest House with the campus and encourage a car-free zone. Large overhangs and outdoor shading provide shelter from both sun and rain.

The New Kolkata Development Authority is responsible for organizing and monitoring the development of New Town along the East side of the city. The development, is a symbol of the future character of the city with modern design language and facilities. Hence, their new office building also needed to showcase the spirit of new generation of the culture.
The objective of the design was to provide a modern facility for the client, while considering the importance of public access into the building. The proposed design not only accommodates for the public, but promotes it to become a public forum, open to the citizens for various purposes, thus making a direct connection to the development to the people.
The facade scheme reflects the porous, yet firm nature of the authority through a pattern which is derived from traditional art work of Bengal.

The project vision is to cater some of the upper crest of the city population, while offering a lifestyle standard not preceded by any similar projects in Kolkata.
The wide range of public and private open/semi-open spaces are the unique feature of this design. The tall form maximizes the open space at the ground level, and offer good views and visibility. The large, green terraces break the residential apartments, providing greenscape to every resident. They also house the pool, club, and other places for socializing.
The facade draws inspiration from the climate friendly traditional architecture in Kolkata, and respects the need of privacy and views in each apartment.

The brief required a design which has traditional Vastu planning principles combined with modern architectural expression.
The planning is based on the 9 square and Vastu Purusha Mandala. The squares shift from the origin to make way for courtyards and water bodies. The architecture, responds to the climate of Kolkata with large protecting overhangs, shaded and semi-shaded outdoor spaces, and well lit internal volumes.

The location of existing Cleaveland Memorial Shoreway (CMS), similar to the railway tracks, divides the station site from the waterfront. The highway thus is pushed inside, abutting the tracks, so as to provide better pedestrian access and site connectivity with the waterfront. Also, the CMS and adjoining roads occupies over 30% of the site. Thus, the CMS is lifted up, releasing space below for accommodating the station. This new configuration allows optimum space utilization for the multi modal transit facility program underneath the CMS and frees up over 60% of existing site area for landscaping and public plaza. The newly created plaza is further integrated with the Browns stadium plaza by removal of Alfred Learner Way.
To allow ample daylight in the station, the CMS is split by separating the two motorway directions. The so formed splits are enclosed in tubes to contain noise and shut off the view of cars from Mall C. Thus CMS is no longer perceived as an eyesore, with huge volume of traffic and noise separating the waterfront from station, but is seamlessly integrated with the design and thus escapes attention.
As the roof over the proposed tracks will be seen from Mall C, the roof is designed as fabric tensile structure, so as to avoid glare and enable column free day lit platform space underneath. The roof of the tubes enclosing CMS act as mediator between the Mall C and the plaza on ground. This roof, designed as green roof, also acts as a viewing deck. A cable suspended bridge connects the Mall C with this viewing deck. A Helical pedestrian ramp and set of elevators connects the plaza with the deck. Further, the alignment of the bridge and the helical ramp reinforces the most important axis defined by the Mall & the surrounding public buildings.

Fabrication Sequence
The challenge is to propose a free-standing, prefab dwelling unit for a footprint no more than 400sf (37.5sm) in an urban setting anywhere in the world. Fit for two adults, its basic program shall include sleeping, bathing, cooking, living, working/studying, and storage areas.
This entry is focussed on cities like Mumbai and Kolkata, where beside the acute housing problem, afford ability is also a big factor for the city dwellers. Climate on the other hand, plays important role on choice of materials, life cycle , and maintenance.
