Sugar maple growth response to a Ca addition
Eric MacPhersonSaint Michael’s College
Background
• Sugar maples have been declining as a result acid deposition (Driscoll, 2001)
• Studies have shown that sugar maples respond positively to calcium additions (Wilmot et al 1996, Bailey et al 2004, Juice et al 2006)
• In 2011, calcium (CaSiO3) was added at 6 plots in powdered form in the same amount as W1 .
MethodsMeasurements were taken in
three sites at Bartlett a young, mid old, JB mid and old, and HB old
Overstory maples (>10cm DBH) measured using a dowel and DBH tape
Understory Saplings ( 2< DBH<10 cm DBH) measure at DBH
First Year Seedlings measured from the ground to terminal bud. • Marked with clear zip ties last
year

HypothesesThe sugar maples in the
calcium addition will show a larger increase in growth than sugar maples in the control.
The first year seedlings in the calcium addition will be taller than the control seedlings

Summary
The calcium addition sugar maples have grown faster than the control sugar maples.
The seedling height showed no significance.
Discussion
The calcium addition has increased the ph of the soil.
Calcium is a structural component of sugar maples
Future Work• Continue to monitor the
larger trees• Sample and weigh biomass
of the seedlings• Survivorship
