Uncharted Lands In 1602 the government
of the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands created a mission of exploring North America.
They claimed any uncharted areas for the United provinces.
First Fort After many trading
expeditions the first Dutch settlement in the Americas was founded in 1615.
It was located on Castle Island and was named Fort Nassau.
Fort OranjeFort Nassau was mainly a trading post
for the fur trade. It was later replaced by Fort Oranje at
present day Albany.
