The Legislative Palace
• The Peruvian government is divided into three branches:
To be eligible, candidates must be Peruvian citizens, have
passed their 25th birthday, and not have had their right to
vote suspended. The President of Congress is Fredy
Otárola, of the “Gana Peru” political party.
The Legislative branch: It’s
the Congress which makes
up the laws. Congress
consists of 130 congressmen
who are elected for five-year
periods in office.
The Executive branch: It makes sure that people follow the law.
Its leader is the president. Our president is Ollanta Humala. The
president serves for a term of 4 years.
The Judicial branch: It makes sure that people interpret the law
correctly. It is made up of the courts and their judges. The highest
court in Peru is the Supreme Court. Our current chief justice is
Dr. Enrique Mendoza.
The Congress
The Congress represents the plural opinion of the nation. The
Members of the Congress are elected to serve the nation,
legislate, control and represent our interests and aspirations.
The first Constituent Congress was set up on September 20th,
1822.
