… as well as own consulting experience

According to numerous studies …

… a significant number of IT projects fail

When do we call a project a success?

When do we call a project a success?

on time on budget on quality

A brief checklist for avoiding IT project failure

Before you start your project …

… you should be aware thatBusiness and IT do not just look differently…

… they actually live in different worlds…

… they have their conflicts of interest

… and do not even speak the same language!

Twix!

Raider!

So, find common tools to enable better understanding …

… in order to avoid inconsistent solutions …

… as well as unpleasant misfits

I cannot overemphasize this point!

Most important: Assign a project manager who knows what s/he is doing

A person who is not occupied…

http://www.theofel.de/archives/2005‐08‐12‐information‐overload‐oder‐sofa‐overload.jpg

… who knows how to involve the right people

… who uses resources efficiently …

… and won‘t overload the project!

Always have a clear target …

… and a realistic time frame!

http://sahralu.files.wordpress.com/2009/09/um_d‐maljkovic_gr.jpg

… and don‘t forget to include some buffer!

Understand the complexity of your business …

…particularly the hidden and informal aspects!

A well‐structured project plan helps to keep track …

… and to set the right focus!

Ensure direct access to the relevant leaders …

… and escalate things, if needed!

Define clear and visible milestones …

TESTINGCOMPLETED

… and celebrate your successes!

Watch your scope … it tends to creep away

For expertise, always ask the right persons …

… guys who really share your goals and interests …

Hi, my name is Sly! I am the Sales

Director of Augur. Oursoftware will solve all

your problems!

… otherwise you might get on inhospitable terrain

Stay away from unripe products …

… otherwise… well, you know

Start communicatingyour project in early phases …

… and properly manage expectations!

Allow sufficient time for testing (your users are no dummies)

For any case: have a plan B

… and take care of vour project after going‐live
