Car insurer says it will not follow rival and scrap pay-as-you-drive

Car insurer More Than has pledged to continuefitting satellite trackers in customers' vehicles, despite rival Norwich Union abandoning theidea last week.

Both insurers have been trying to reinventmotor cover, using the technology to linkpremiums to when and where a car is driven.

Norwich Union last week wrote to more than10,000 customers saying it was ending its pay-as-you-drive cover.

The insurer pioneered the concept with twopolicies, one for younger drivers and the otherfor low-mileage motorists.

These customers face higher premiums as they will be forced to rearrange theirinsurance over the next three months.

Norwich Union says the cost of offering pay-as-you-go cover, including installingsatellite trackers in each car, is no longer sustainable. The company announced 1,800job losses this month.

But More Than spokesman Nick Dear says: 'The technology is working for us and wehave no plans to withdraw it.'

More Than's 'drive time' package, aimed at young drivers, uses a tracker to monitor if acar is driven after 11pm.

This is when risks of an accident are highest. Basic premiums are low, but a £25 fee ischarged for each night drive.

Last month More Than also launched a Green Wheels policy that allows customers tomonitor their motoring through a personal 'green box' car tracker.

The system gives drivers detailed feedback to help reduce their carbon tyre printthrough fuel-efficient driving (see below). In future, the data may be used to calculatepremiums.

Colin Hewitt, finance director at trade association the Marketing Society, has a greenbox fitted to his Vauxhall Vectra.

Colin, 43, who lives in Copthorne, West Sussex, with his wife Beverly and children Tim,14 and Kristina, 11, says: 'The first thing that surprised me was how many shortjourneys I make running the family around.'

But he scored well by avoiding high revs and sudden acceleration and has graduallyimproved his environmental performance. 'I can see drivers getting into the habit ofchecking every few days and not wanting their performance to deteriorate,' he says.

Dowshan Humzah, product director at More Than, says: 'By helping motorists drivemore efficiently, the green box can help offset the cost of rising fuel prices.'

Initially, More Than will pay the costs of installing and operating the green boxes, but infuture it may charge.

A green spy in the car

More Than's Green Wheels tracker links to the car's engine management system andsends data via a satellite link to a website that records journey details.

The technology should work with cars manufactured since 2003.

The motorist's driving style is rated from A to G, with A the best 'green' driving and G theworst.

Drivers can also review performance such as high revs, sharp braking andacceleration and the number of short journeys.

Those who want more details can review specific journeys, seeing an estimate for theircarbon emissions.

Only the individual driver sees their personal data. But More Than receives reportsbased on customers' average driving behaviour.

Dowshan Humzah of More Than says: 'In time we may be able to use this driving datato help set premiums.

'There is a logic that says that those who drive with an eye on the environment couldalso be safer drivers.'
