• Brake is a mechanical device which inhabits motion.

• Brake is used to stop the motion of a moving object.

What is brake and its function?

[3]DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

PURPOSE OF BRAKING SYSTEM• Stop the vehicle by converting the kinetic energy of

the vehicle to heat energy.

• Heat energy is created in the brakes by friction.

• Friction is created between a moving and a non-moving surface at each wheel to generate the heat.

• Disc and drum brakes are the most common type of braking systems used.

[15]DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

features

• Linkage cable, rod & cam are not used

• Requires less energy to apply

• It contains less less wearable parts

[16]DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

Draw Back

• It does not work, if air enters into it

• When the rubber parts get weak, it produce leakage & does not work

• It requires greater maintenance & care

[17]DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

Conclusion

• Hydraulic braking systems are is used in light vehicles such as cars, bikes etc. because it requires less effort.
