Pop music is a genre of popular music that originated in the late 50s as an offshoot of rock and roll, in combination with other musical genres that were in vogue at the times.
As a genre, pop music is very eclectic, often borrowing elements from other styles such as dance, rock, Latin music, rhythm and blues or folk.
