Darigold (United States)
Sharing best pracBces for the low carbon future
Dairy and food processing • 1400 employees and 12 producBon faciliBes
• 8 billion pounds bulk milk yields
Energy management acBviBes • Since 2001 on a project-‐by-‐project basis and since 2010 using systemaBc approach
• In 2011, began implemenBng ISO 50001
Energy strategy has resulted in a 21% energy intensity reducBon (BTU/unit) since 2001.
Unable to aWribute savings to EnMS per se. Company received a lot of outside support which allowed it to improve energy savings

Sappi (Netherlands)
Sharing best pracBces for the low carbon future
Pulp and paper company
• CerBficaBon was not a driver
Already experience with ISO 9000, 14001 and OSHAS • ISO 500001 is similar to 14001 so implementaBon relaBvely easy
Cost: 2 weeks of FTE + EUR 3000 for energy audit
Unable to claim savings due to ISO 50001 • Too early to tell and systems were already more or less in place

Role of Energy Management Programs
Sharing best pracBces for the low carbon future
EnMS itself is not sufficient to deliver savings
• Policies, drivers and incenBves and implementaBon support are needed
• Tying to performance improvements is key

IncenBves for implementaBon and delivery mechanisms ObligaBons • Singapore, South Korea
NegoBated agreements • Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark
IncenBves • Germany exempBon from “eco-‐tax” (extended to 2022)
AlternaBve Delivery Mechanisms: 1. Corporate supply chain iniBaBves • SKF now requiring supplier to adopt ISO 50001
2. UBliBes • DTE and DNV KEMA providing incenBves to ISO 50001 implementaBon and SEP piloBng
