Softening light modifiers: scrims (6x6), large softbox, octabank, umbrellas, bouncing light off foam core etc…
For less soft light: beauty dish, medium to small softbox
Hard light: bare head reflectors, grids spots, snoots,etc.. Good for rim lighting
